Management (PhD)

The management PhD program is central to the mission of the Asper School of Business at UM. Students are mentored in their research program and in the development of teaching skills. Asper PhD graduates go on to fulfill the increasing need for Canadian-trained management academics.

Experience the Asper difference

The PhD program is central to the mission of the Asper School of Business at UM. The program was founded in 1990 and our commitment reflects the increasing need for Canadian-trained management academics   The AACSB-accredited program has already fulfilled the expectations of students and faculty and continues to attract highly-qualified individuals who are interested in developing their research and teaching skills.

The PhD program in management is designed to produce graduates who have competitive research and teaching skills and the abilities necessary for placement in teaching positions in Canada and the world.

Expected duration: 4 years

Tuition and fees:  Tuition fees are charged for terms one and two and terms four and five. A continuing fee is paid for term three, term six and each subsequent term. (Refer to Graduate tuition and fees .)

Throughout their doctoral studies, students are engaged in research apprenticeships with the faculty. Students are assured of working with faculty members on several projects during their program and are required to spend a specific number of hours per week working for a faculty member during the term and in the summer. In this way, students are assured of receiving hands-on experience with the research process.

Students are expected to publish conference papers or journal articles during their program. Travelling to conferences and presenting research is a great way to meet other researchers in your field and gain exposure for your work.

Because the PhD program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue an academic career, a teaching practicum is required to help students develop teaching skills.

Areas of specialization

Four areas of specialization are offered:

The PhD program in Marketing is designed to develop scholars who conduct innovative research and make a significant impact in academia, particularly through teaching at leading universities. Our program emphasizes research areas that explore methods for analyzing and improving marketing decisions, managerial and strategic issues, and a deeper understanding of buyer and consumer behavior.

In the PhD program, students take a variety of courses, including marketing theory, consumer behavior, and research methods, as well as courses from non-business disciplines such as economics, statistics, and psychology. Through marketing seminars, students explore recent scholarly work and develop their own research ideas and methodologies. From early in the program, students collaborate with faculty members on joint research projects and eventually develop their own original research, culminating in a dissertation. Additionally, students gain valuable teaching experience by leading marketing courses.

The PhD in Finance is a rigorous, research-intensive program aimed at preparing students for careers in academia. The program provides in-depth training in asset pricing, corporate finance, and empirical methods. Our students engage in independent research from an early stage, working closely with faculty who do research across all areas of finance, including asset pricing, investments, corporate finance, corporate governance, and behavioral finance. Graduates from our PhD program have secured positions at Western University, Ryerson University, Carlton University, University of Regina, Canada Life, and more.

PhD students receive comprehensive training in both theoretical and empirical finance through advanced courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, asset pricing, and corporate finance, with the option to take additional courses aligned with their research interests. They gain practical experience as research assistants and may co-author papers with faculty on cutting-edge finance topics. Students often present their work at conferences and publish research before entering the job market. The program, which also includes teaching apprenticeships, equips students to pursue careers as academics in finance.

Business Administration

The department of Business Administration offers both doctoral and research masters’ (MSc) programs in management.  Our faculty are highly engaged scholars, working on a wide range of topics spanning disciplines (from Strategy and Organizational Behaviour to Entrepreneurship and Global Management) and research methodologies. Students and faculty use a wide variety of methods, ranging from ethnographies to lab experiments, and from the creative use of archival data to longitudinal surveys and experience-sampling methods.

Our faculty have published in the most widely-recognized journals, including Academy of Management Review , Journal of International Business Studies , Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice , Human Relations , Administrative Science Quarterly , Organization Studies , Organization Science , Journal of Applied Psychology , and Journal of Management Studies , among other top management outlets.

The MSc program can prepare students for doctoral studies at Asper or other institutions, or prepare students for research-oriented roles in industry. Students can craft their program to reflect their focus on a subfield, or work at the intersection of two or more subfields, including:

Organizational Behaviour OB is the study of individuals and groups in organizations.  Drawing on insights from psychology and other fields, OB researchers explore how individuals and groups behave and interact in organizations.  Our faculty study topics like customer service interactions (Irene Kim), justice, and ideas of self-help and self-improvement (Jae Yun Kim), mistreatment and microaggressions (Raymond Lee), conflict (Lukas Neville), leadership and ethics (Wei Wang), equity, diversity and inclusion (Suzanne Gagnon), and cross-cultural interactions at work (Jieying Chen).

Spotlight: Read about OB professor Jae Yun Kim’s research on the exploitation of passionate employees in the New York Times .

Strategy  Strategy researchers focus on how firms formulate and execute their market and non-market strategies, and the influence of firms’ environments and processes on those strategies and strategic decisions.  Many of our faculty members study these dynamics in international contexts, and we welcome students with an interest in international business.  Here at Asper, our faculty study how ‘ambidextrous’ firms balance multiple strategies (Parshotam Dass), how they navigate firm-government relations (Cheng Li), and how they manage cross-border mergers and acquisitions (Ratchel Zeng).

Spotlight: Read more about Ratchel Zeng’s work , published in the Journal of International Business Studies , on how multinational firms manage to control and coordinate action in their global subsidiaries.

Organizational Theory Organizational theory scholars conduct research on organizations and their environment, considering how organizations are formed and change, and how organizing happens in the context of markets and institutional fields.   At Asper, we have a very strong group of researchers conducting qualitative and quantitative research in organization theory, including how firms respond to contentious social issues (Sean Buchanan), social and ecological thought (Bruno Dyck), and the categorization processes that shape product market competition (Jie Yang).

Spotlight: Read about OT professor Sean Buchanan’s work on markets for voyeurism, from reality TV to slum tourism.

Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship is a multi-disciplinary domain of study, drawing from strategy, finance, economics, sociology, psychology and other areas to better understand how new ventures and new organizations are formed to create both economic and social value.  Entrepreneurship researchers study both market contexts (entrepreneurship and new ventures) and corporate contexts (intrapreneurship and innovation).

Topics explored by Asper researchers include ‘intrapreneurship’ and corporate entrepreneurship (Wenlong Yuan), strategic leadership and family business management (Zhenyu Wu), social ventures and microfinance (Junyon Im), cultural entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial framing (Xiumei Li), and exploring entrepreneurship’s intersection with sustainability and well-being (Nathan Greidanus).

Spotlight: Read about entrepreneurship professor Nathan Greidanus’ collaboration with Chi Liao (finance) on how ADHD influences entrepreneurship .

Supply Chain Management

The PhD in Supply Chain Management at Asper is designed to cultivate the next generation of thought leaders and researchers. Students benefit from personalized mentorship by renowned faculty members who are experts in critical areas such as supply chain resilience, logistics innovation, and sustainability practices. The program emphasizes advanced theories and methodologies, providing students with a robust foundation in quantitative and qualitative research techniques. Through a rigorous curriculum, students engage in comprehensive studies that challenge conventional thinking and explore emerging trends in supply chain management. They have the opportunity to collaborate on groundbreaking research projects, contributing valuable insights that address real-world challenges faced by industries today. The program also encourages interdisciplinary approaches, allowing students to integrate knowledge from related fields and expand their research horizons. Graduates emerge well-equipped to excel in academia, industry research roles, and consulting, ready to drive strategic innovations and sustainable practices that shape the future of supply chain management. With a focus on producing influential research and fostering impactful professional connections, the PhD program positions students to significantly contribute to the global supply chain landscape.

The PhD program in Supply Chain Management provides in-depth training in advanced research methodologies, including logistics modelling, demand forecasting, sustainability and optimization. With a rigorous curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge and practical application, students engage in intensive coursework and hands-on projects to tackle real-world supply chain challenges. Collaboration with faculty enhances their research capabilities and exposure to current practices. Graduates emerge well-prepared for leadership roles in academia and industry, equipped to drive innovation and develop strategic solutions that influence the future of supply chain management globally.

To begin your application, please visit our Faculty of Graduate Studies Application Portal .

Students enrolled in the Sobey PhD program are subject to all the rules and regulations outlined in the  Saint Mary's University Graduate Academic Calendar .

To be considered for admission into the Sobey PhD program, applicants must meet a number of requirements and complete a rigorous application process.

Acceptance into the Sobey PhD Program is highly competitive. Each year we only accept between four and six of the applications received, with an acceptance rate of roughly one in five. In order to be considered for admission, applicants are asked to pay careful attention to all the requirements for a successful application.

Requirements and Deadlines

Decisions regarding admission to the doctoral program will be made based on the applicant's academic qualifications and achievements, fit with the program's areas of specialization and the availability of an appropriate supervisor. To that end, all of the following will be considered:

Qualifications: Students entering the doctoral program must have a Master's degree from a recognized university. Normal minimum requirements for admission are a grade/quality point average of 3.6 on a 4.0 scale (B+ to A-) and GMAT (or GRE) above 600. Business Studies: At least a minimal breadth in business studies is expected. Ideally, applicants should have an undergraduate and/or Masters degree, which includes at substantial business studies element (e.g., a Bachelor of Commerce, Masters in Business Administration). Students without previous degrees in management education may be admitted as "qualifying" students but could be required to undertake selected management courses in addition to the normal requirements of the PhD program. GMAT/GRE: Candidates are required to provide scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The minimum requirement is the equivalent of a GMAT score above 600. Personal Statement: At the time of application, prospective students should submit a personal statement (Maximum 4 pages), including: Potential research interests Potential supervisors Relevant research, volunteer, and work experience Career objectives and long-range goals Academic honours, awards, and/or scholarships. A list of publications, conference papers, and/or technical reports University committee work Any other information that is relevant to your application.   Supervisor: In admitting students to the program, the PhD Program Council will consider the availability of potential dissertation supervisors. Once accepted into the program, students in consultation with the PhD Program Coordinator will be designated an advisor who will assist in the development of the student’s dissertation topic. The assignment of an advisor will occur no later than the successful completion of the student’s comprehensive examination. The advisor will be appointed on the basis of his or her expertise in relation to the student’s dissertation. Where a student in the program has identified an appropriate supervisor, every effort will be made to ensure that he or she is appointed as the advisor/supervisor. Note: The PhD Supervisor should normally be a tenured faculty member at Saint Mary's University or other post-secondary institution in Atlantic Canada. In the latter case such faculty must be recommended by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research as Adjunct Professors at Saint Mary's University. Letters of Recommendation: All applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation from persons capable of assessing the candidate's academic ability and research potential. Career Objectives: a statement of career objectives is required. University Transcripts: Official transcripts from all universities attended (sent directly by the granting institution) are required at the time of application. English: The PhD program requires a high level of analytical skills and reading ability. To that end, strong English language proficiency is important for success in the program. Applicants who were not educated in English are required to submit official scores on the CanTest, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or recognized equivalent test of written and oral English language proficiency. Normal minimum requirements are TOEFL internet-based (iBT): A minimum score of 100 overall with at least 22 in Writing; 21 in Reading, 27 in Speaking, 20 in Listening. The minimum score on the paper-based TOEFL is 600. Scores must be less than two years old.

These are the normal minimum requirements, but each case will be evaluated on its own merits. However, applicants will not be evaluated for admittance where any of the required elements have not been submitted at the time when the application is being considered.

The deadline for applications is February 15 for a September start.

For specific program requirements, please refer to the departmental program website

What makes the program unique?

The research faculty in Accounting publish in the top journals in the field, and engage in empirical research in financial accounting, auditing and taxation. Our program draws effectively on strong research faculty in other fields, including finance, economics, policy analysis, and management science. Of particular importance are the variety of research workshops held each week which expose students to current research by leading researchers from UBC and other universities in accounting and the related fields.

The program attracts some of the world’s sharpest, most curious minds who, over the course of the program, sharpen their skills and deepen their knowledge. Upon graduating, you will:

  • Have in-depth knowledge of the process of scientific discovery and the Philosophy of Science (epistemology), which you will be able to apply to your research discipline.
  • Be a skilled communicator with the ability to share your knowledge and expertise effectively with a variety of audiences. You will be able to present your findings at a research seminar or a conference, to teach a complete course effectively, and be able to publish in the academic genre of your discipline.
  • Have the appropriate analytical research foundation for your chosen area of specialization, and you will be able to apply your analytical knowledge and skills to research problems in that area.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of leading research within your chosen area of specialization, and you will be able to enrich and advance that body of knowledge through deep analysis and synthesis of research problems and findings.

Program Structure

Students are required to take a cross-divisional course in research methods, a course in teaching methods, and the following four courses in the accounting division.:

  • COMM 651 Analysis of Accounting Information in Markets. An examination of theoretical research into the role of public accounting information in capital markets and its relation to market prices, and the impact and disclosure of private investor and private management information.
  • COMM 657 Empirical Methods in Accounting Research. An introduction to empirical accounting research, emphasizing the use of theoretical arguments in developing testable hypotheses, econometric methodologies used to address accounting research problems and data issues that arise in testing hypotheses.
  • COMM 658 Research Workshop in Accounting. Discussion of accounting research presented by faculty and PhD students from UBC and other universities.
  • COMM 659 Advanced Topics in Empirical Accounting Research. A selection of special topics in accounting research.  The exact topics covered depend on the research expertise of the faculty members teaching the course in any given year.

You select your remaining coursework from other divisions and departments such as Finance, Economics and Mathematics, with the guidance of the PhD advisor.

You begin active research in the first year of your program by completing a summer research project. Most students write their comprehensive examination after their second year of course-work and spend the remainder of the program working on their dissertation research.

Tuition & Financial Support

Financial support.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

We provide a financial package that includes tuition plus $30,000 per year for the first five years of the PhD Program.

Average Funding

  • 3 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 3 students was $15,718.
  • 1 student received Academic Assistantships valued at $2,400.
  • 3 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 3 students was $19,606.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Please review Filing taxes in Canada on the student services website for more information.

Cost Estimator

Applicants have access to the cost estimator to develop a financial plan that takes into account various income sources and expenses.
