For Deepa, joining McKinsey as a business presentation specialist was supposed to be a short-term job. Seven years later, she’s still here and in a leadership role overseeing the work of a large team in visual graphics and media.
I was suddenly in a place where people who were my leaders yesterday were now my peers and I was managing colleagues who used to be my peers. It was a major transition, but McKinsey prepared me well with training and on-the-job experience.
After graduating from the Sri Krishna Arts and Science College, I joined McKinsey as a business-presentation specialist.
My plan was to stay for a year, then continue my studies. Seven years later, I’m still here and have advanced into a team leader role. I now lead a team of 21 colleagues in visual graphics and media, which provides presentation-design support to McKinsey consultants and colleagues worldwide.
I’m proof you can make your own McKinsey
I was a business-presentation specialist for only about two-and-a-half years when the team leader position opened. Moving from specialist to team leader without first holding other positions was not the typical path, and I was one of the first to make the leap.
Becoming a leader at such a young age
I was suddenly in a place where people who were my leaders were now my peers and I was managing colleagues who used to be my peers. It was a major transition, but McKinsey prepared me with thorough onboarding training and on-the-job experience. My onboarding covered a variety of topics, such as our firm’s purpose and values, emotional intelligence, and difficult conversations. They were instrumental in cultivating a leader’s mindset.
I am often the youngest person in the room, which was hard at first, but the entire journey has been easier because of the support and respect I receive here.
More about me
I am a McKinsey Diversity and Inclusion champion. It’s a group whose members live and practice Diversity and Inclusion through actions. For instance, we facilitate activities for diversity events, like Day of Pink or International Women’s Day. Outside of work, you’ll find me dancing, listening to music, or telling stories via vlogs. I also make it a point to watch the sunset every day.
