The ways in which nurses were educated during the 20th century are no longer adequate for dealing with the realities of healthcare in today’s fast-paced, high-tech world of medicine. Many institutions now require registered nurses to hold a bachelor’s degree for this reason.

Given the increasing healthcare demands of our population, opportunities in nursing employment are expected to grow by more than 40 percent by 2031, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. At St. Joseph's University, our mission is to prepare the next generation of nurses by offering a four-year, B.S. program for undergraduates.

While nursing programs and career opportunities are plentiful throughout the state – especially in Long Island – it still takes hard work and the right education to obtain a lucrative position in this competitive field. In addition to registered nurse, the most common career paths for aspiring nurses include licensed practical nurse (LPN) and certified nursing assistant (CNA). RNs must be skilled at performing a variety of challenging tasks that include conducting diagnostic tests, analyzing results, and establishing patient care plans.
