विद्या बालन की गिनती देश की उन चुनिंदा अभिनेत्रियों में होती रही है जिन्होंने सिर्फ अपनी जिद और अपने किरदारों के प्रति अपने समर्पण से हिंदी सिनेमा में महिला प्रधान भूमिकाओँ वाला पूरा एक अलहदा सिनेमा खड़ा कर दिया। उनकी ही फिल्म ‘डर्टी पिक्चर’ ने तापसी पन्नू, नुसरत भरूचा, परिणीति चोपड़ा, हुमा कुरैशी और न जाने कितनी ही अभिनेत्रियों को महिला प्रधान भूमिकाओं वाली फिल्मों में अपनी कूवत और किस्मत आजमाने के लिए प्रेरित किया। और, सच ये भी है कि विद्या बालन की ही फिल्मों ने इस तरह के सिनेमा से दर्शकों को दूर करना भी शुरू किया। अब हालत ये है कि ऐसी फिल्मों को सिनेमाघर मिलना दूभर रहा है। कोरोना काल खत्म होने के बाद भी ऐसी फिल्में सिर्फ ओटीटी पर रिलीज होती रही हैं। शगुन अच्छा था कि विद्या बालन की इसी कड़ी की अगली फिल्म ‘नीयत’ को सिनेमाघर मिले हैं, लेकिन अगर इस फिल्म को बनाया भी ढंग से गया होता तो ये हिंदी सिनेमा की तमाम अभिनेत्रियों के लिए एक नया प्रस्थान साबित हो सकती थी।

Neeyat Review: The Vidya Balan Starrer Murder Mystery Has Multiple Twists, Prajakta Koli, Rahul Bose, Shashank Arora Shine

Over the years, the number of murder mysteries that have released have now trained the audience to get into Sherlock mode as soon as a new trailer is dropped. With the release of the trailer of Neeyat and the multi-starrer cast, the whodunnit guesses already began pouring in. This thriller film directed by Anu Menon, stars Vidya Balan , Ram Kapoor, Shahana Goswami, Rahul Bose, Prajakta Koli, Amrita Puri. Neeyat has one too many twists that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats, with a garnish of comic moments.

About The Film…

A millionaire invites all his near and dear ones to his Scottish castle to celebrate his birthday where he is to make an big announcement as well. As the night unfolds, shocking deaths take place, secrets are revealed, and drama unfolds one after another, literally! Right at the beginning of the film, the predictability factor does seem quite evident but as the film proceeds the many twists and turns get rather unpredictable, leaving the audience at the edge of their seats. The comic moments in Neeyat come at moments where the film definitely needs a pick up.

The Actors…

Vidya Balan’s character gives a sense of déjà vu, but in this one the actress’ character impressively solves the case and decodes the other characters’ true colors leaving quite an impact. Ram Kapoor makes for quite a believable deceitful, rich millionaire with multiple layers to his character’s personality that remain exposed by the end of the film. Rahul Bose and Shashank Arora add the quirk factor in the film, tickling the funny bones. Prajakta Koli really does stand out in Neeyat with her prominent performance.

All in all, Neeyat is a film that’s great to get your brain scratching, with moments that you may predict with full confidence being slashed with some interesting twists. How I wish there was a little bit more finessing that was done, however the attempt of creating a murder mystery for an audience that has matured especially post the lockdown, is commendable. This one is worth a watch.

Neeyat Review In Hindi: विद्या बालन ने अपना एक ऐसा नाम बना लिया है कि फिल्में उनके नाम पर चलती हैं. बिना किसी हीरो को चलती हैं और दर्शकों को लगता है कि अगर फिल्म में विद्या बालन हैं तो वो कुछ तो अलग और नया करेंगी. चार साल बाद विद्या थिएटर में लौटी हैं और इस बार भी विद्या ने ऐसा ही किया है. इस फिल्म को विद्या बालन, डायरेक्टर अनु मेनन और प्रोड्यूसर विक्रम मल्होत्रा की हिट तिकड़ी ने बनाया है जो शकुंतला देवी जैसी फिल्म बना चुके हैं.

कहानी ये कहानी है एक मर्डर की. बिजनेसमैन आशीष कपूर यानि राम कपूर अपने करीबी दोस्तों को अपने बर्थडे की पार्टी में बुलाते हैं. ये पार्टी स्कॉटलैंड में समंदर किनारे बने एक विला में है लेकिन कहानी में ट्विस्ट तब आता है जो आशीष कपूर का मर्डर हो जाता है. सीबीआई अफसर बनी विद्या बालन यानि मीरा राव इसकी जांच करती हैं. फिर क्या होता है...ये तो आपको थिएटर जाकर देखना होगा क्योंकि मर्डर मिस्ट्री में इससे ज्यादा चीजें नहीं बताई जा सकती. 

एक्टिंग विद्या की एक्टिंग हमेशा की तरह अच्छी है. उन्होंने किरदार को अलग तरीके से निभाने की कोशिश की है. ये जासूस हीरोगीरी दिखाता है लेकिन अलग तरीके से. विद्या ने इसे अपने स्टाइल में निभाया है और हर बार की तरह उनके फैंस को उनका ये अंदाज पसंद आएगा और विद्या के लिए तो ये फिल्म देखी ही जा सकती है. राम कपूर का काम ठीकठाक है. राहुल बोस का किरदार ऐसा लगता है जैसे ओवर एक्टिंग कर रहे हैं. नीरज काबी, दीपानिता शर्मा, शहाना गोस्वामी, निकी अनेजा, शशांक अरोड़ा सबने अपने अपने किरदार में अच्छा काम किया है. फेमस यू ट्यूबर प्राजक्ता कोली भी इस फिल्म में एक्टिंग करती दिखी हैं और उनका काम भी अच्छा है.

कैसी है फिल्म ये फिल्म आपको कुछ जगह हॉलीवुड की जासूसी फिल्मों वाला फील देती है. कुछ कुछ सीन्स में फिल्म काफी अच्छी लगती है. कहीं कहीं कहानी कसी हुई लगती है तो कहीं कहीं लगता है कि मामला ढीला है. स्क्रीनप्ले और कहानी पर और मेहनत की जानी चाहिए थी. कुछ कुछ चीजें बचकानी सी भी लगती हैं लेकिन कुल मिलाकर ये फिल्म ऐसी है कि इसे आप एक बार तो देख सकते हैं और विद्या बालन के लिए तो ये फिल्म जरूर देखनी जानी चाहिए.

म्यूजिक फिल्म का म्यूजिक एवरेज है और इसे और बेहतर किया जा सकता था. 

कुल मिलाकर यही कहा जा सकता है कि विद्या बालन के लिए थिएटर चले जाइए.

Neeyat Review: Vidya Balan Is Flawless But The Movie Has A Rushed Climax

Neeyat Review: Vidya Balan film has its moments and is a sincere attempt but it isn’t engaging enough for you to feel the joy of solving a murderous puzzle.

Each has a bone to pick with Kapoor and thus a motive to kill him. Who’s the killer? Among these we also have CBI officer Mira Rao (Vidya Balan) who has also been summoned by Kapoor for that big decision. Director Anu Menon tries to serve you a perfect whodunit with fun twists and sharp satire but it falters in its execution.

In a location-based murder-mystery where it takes 30 minutes to establish the proceedings and an hour before the first death, this does feel a teensy bit narratively extravagant. Even if you want to overlook, you can’t find uncanny resemblance to many Agatha Christie novels and the film does feel like a tamer version of the spectacularly crafted Glass Onion Knives Out (2022) barring aside the final twist, which of course is the crux of the film.

Neeyat is a flawless and unpredictable whodunit in which the question of “who did it" is more intriguing than the questions of “how and why." With a methodical build-up and a slow burn, the movie never veers off course from its subject. The movie’s climax, which is perhaps its most intriguing part, feels a little hurried and convenient. There isn’t enough depth in the characters for you to care about them or their secret goals. This movie would have been much more captivating with a stronger character development and carefully written storyline. The core of murder mysteries is your desire to learn the truth. Although you want to catch the criminal in this case, you are not kept on the edge of your seat by the series of events that make up the investigation.

In the performance department, Vidya Balan should pat herself on her back for a superlative act; there is no doubt that she is a powerhouse, flawless from frame one to 10. She plays the role of CBI officer in a way where her apprehensive tone reverberates the authority of experience that differentiate a 6 from a 9. It is this ‘ahead of the curve yet keeping it mysterious’ quality to her portrayal that keeps Neeyat ticking which is otherwise very boring.

Ram Kapoor’s act as a billionaire comes across as a parody of Vijay Mallya. His one-tone acting is something that he needs to seriously consider. Ditto for Shashank Arora who needs to come out of his serious boy image. Neeraj Kabi and Rahul Bose try to play their parts well. Shahana Goswami’s over the top acting feels a bit unnecessary while the rest of the cast are also passable with their performances.

Neeyat has its moments and is a sincere attempt but it isn’t engaging enough for you to feel the joy of solving a murderous puzzle or detective riddles.

Neeyat review: This concoction of Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes produces more groans than thrills

Director Anu Menon creates the right atmosphere, thanks to the art direction and cinematography, but flounders when it comes to storytelling.

Director Anu Menon’s Neeyat (Motive) is a solid example of how making a mystery film is not everyone’s cup of tea. Apart from the Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes hangover, the film also reminds you of Daniel Craig’s Knives Out (2019).

Neeyat also has a minuscule semblance to the pilot episode of Vishal Bharadwaj’s web series Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley (2023).

Well, there is nothing wrong with getting influenced by the works of others provided you make a compelling film. But Anu Menon’s Neeyat provides very few thrills. In fact, the thrills can be counted on your fingertips.

The film’s plot revolves around a fugitive billionaire Ashish Kapoor (Ram Kapoor).

It is easy to guess that he is modelled by several businessmen who have committed financial fraud and escaped from the country. His over-ambitious behaviour causes many innocent employees in his company to commit suicide.

Ashish Kapoor has a beautiful mansion by the seaside in Scotland. He decides to celebrate his birthday there with close family members and friends. They all have their inner demons.

Present at this party is also the supposed CBI officer Meera Rao (Vidya Balan).

Things take a drastic turn when Ashish Kapoor is found dead under the sea. What follows is a whodunnit where each member is a suspect.

Ram kapoor & rahul bose stand out.

There are only a few actors who stand out in this ensemble cast.  Chief among them is Ram Kapoor and Rahul Bose.

Ram Kapoor plays the power-hungry billionaire with panache. He does a swell job of capturing the eccentrics of Ashish.

Rahul Bose also has his moments playing Ashish Kapoor’s brother-in-law Jimmy. His character is a caricature but Rahul Bose makes it land with his enthusiasm.

Last but not least, Shefali Shah, in a special appearance, packs a far bigger punch than Vidya in the entire film.

There are a couple of twists that do take you by surprise — one of them is Ram Kapoor’s character and the other is Vidya Balan’s. But these twists come so late that the audiences are exhausted by that time.

Dragged narrative.

As mentioned earlier, Anu Menon does create the right atmosphere. This is majorly thanks to Lydia Moss’s art direction and the cinematography by Andreas Neo.

They both are successful in creating a tension-filled atmosphere. This atmosphere adds more depth to the story than the direction.

Ashish Kapoor’s mansion is also a character in itself.

However, a big issue with Neeyat is the dragged narration of Anu Menon. The film takes a long time to get to the point. The pacing is slow and some layers have been unnecessarily added.

Neeyat also tries to make social commentary on how the employees are left in a lurch because of these power-hungry billionaires, driving them to suicide. But these portions don’t make any impact because of the flat direction.

Another major problem with Neeyat is how Vidya Balan goes about her role as Meera Rao. The energy needed for a female Sherlock Holmes is absolutely missing. Vidya plays her character with unenthusiasm.
