The 3 R’s of the Environment:Reduce, Reuse, Recycle By Courtney Caley

Objectives • The students will understand what waste is and how it affects our environment. • The students will be able to discuss the meanings of reduce, reuse, and recycle. • They will also learn ways to apply the three R’s to their everyday life at school, at home, and in their community.

Essential Questions • What is waste? • How does waste effect our environment? • What does it mean to reduce? • What does it mean to reuse? • What does it mean to recycle? • What ways can we help our environment and reduce, reuse, and recycle?

Waste… • Is anything discarded, rejected, surplused, abandoned, or released into the environment in a manner that could harm our environment. • Also referred to as litter. • Waste uses up valuable natural resources and habitats for animals, as well as adequate means of disposal for landfills. • Also makes for an unhealthy environment for people and animals to live in.

Reduce… • Using less of something or making something smaller results in a smaller amount of waste. • Ex: buying in bulk, making smart packaging decisions, use durable items rather than disposable items

Reuse… • Reuse materials in their original form or pass down to a friend to reuse. • Ex: reuse cups instead of disposable ones, instead of replacing something when it breaks just repair it, donate items to a charity instead of throwing them away.

Recycle… • This is when you save and take reusable materials to places where they can be remade into the same product or into new products.

Things We Should Always Recycle… • Aluminum cans • Building materials • Cardboard • Electronic equipment • Glass (bottles and jars) • Magazines • Metal • Newspaper • Yard waste • Oil • Paper • Plastic bags • Plastic bottles • Steel cans • Tires • White goods (appliances) • Wood • Writing/copy paper

Activities • Start a compost pile at the school. • Add recycle bins in the classroom labled: - glass - plastic - paper - aluminum • Make a mural of a big blue sky and their ideas of what a better environment is and ways they will make it happen. • The students will use a computer to make their labels and get some pictures to add to the mural.

TEKS • b.1B – learn how to use and conserve resources and materials. • b.3A- make decisions using information b.3B- discuss and justify the merits of decisions; and b3C- explain a problem in his/her own words and identify a task and solution related to the problem. • Technology (10) Communication. The student formats digital information for appropriate and effective communication. (A) use font attributes, color, white space, and graphics to ensure that products are appropriate for the defined audience;

  • Reduce Reduce means to cut down on the amount of waste being thrown out
  • Reuse Reuse means to use things over and over again and find new uses for objects e.g. use a water bottle over and over for school!
  • Recycle Recycle means to re-use the item and create something else with it.
  • The average person throws away 726 kilograms of waste each year!
  • The average family throw away the amount equal to half a fully grown elephant each year. Doesnt sound that bad? Thats equal to 1 . 5 TONS of rubbish each year
  • There are 2 types of waste, biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
  • Biodegradable means its able to rot naturally and non-biodegradable cant rot naturally.
  • Examples of biodegradable waste include garden and kitchen waste like potato skins and banana skins. Newspaper is also biodegradable!
  • Buy things loose. When youre buying vegetables or fruit buy them without the packaging, as this produces less waste.
  • Make a compost pile and have a brown bin at home
  • For more info on how to stop waste visit Kids' Stuff About Waste Reduction and Recycling ?
  • 1 of plastic bags are recycled.
  • A few years ago a study showed that 8 million pounds of plastic bags are thrown away each year.
  • If you dont recycle them, animals can eat them and get stuck in their throat and they will suffocate.
  • Last year 4 billion steel cans were recycled in the UK. Don't forget that all steel is 100 recyclable and can be recycled many times without losing any quality.
  • 1 ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees!
  • Reuse paper around the home as scrap paper or packing material. Envelopes can also be reused.
  • Another good way to reduce paper is to read the news online this will stop the massive amount of trees being cut down for newspapers alone!
  • In our school we do lots of things to reduce, reuse and recycle.
  • We recycle old glass lenses, stamps and mobile phones, on top of every thing else like paper, cardboard and plastic bottles.
  • We have a compost bin, a breathing area, a green house and every class has its own blue bin.
  • We have a garden for birds, rodents, insects and more!
  • We even have a newly refurbished our P6 vegetable garden!!!
  • Our school runs 3 bus services, cutting down on the amount of CO2 we create!
  • We also use our textbooks over and over and over again, helping to save trees!
  • We have an eco-schools club run by Ann Hegarty and we have 2 green flags!
  • Cardboard e.g easter egg boxes
  • Christmas, birthday and special occasions cards.
  • Milk cartons
  • Plastic bottles
  • Glass bottles
  • Organic waste
  • Animal waste

Editor's Notes

  • “When Will We Be Recycled, Momma?” is a book that can be read to the class before beginning the thematic unit on sustainability. After finishing the book, the students are encouraged to take the pledge to begin reducing, reusing, and recycling themselves. Students are able to access the blog to see all of the other actions students across the nation are taking in sustainability, and share with others what their actions they have been taking. Teachers can also retrieve ideas from what other teachers are doing in their classrooms to teach and encourage recycling! Source: http://www.onebottleonedream.com/index.html
  • *The Podcast has a few seconds of silence before beginning with audio* The podcast can be useful in teaching this topic, because it is both educational and entertaining for students to listen to. Although considered a podcast, it also comes equipped with a video that the students can view. The interesting characters (Aunt Litter, the Patrol, and The Grunge) are interactive for the children, explore important lessons and questions, and also perform an original song that the class can learn! • This instructional video reinforces students the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle. It shows different ways that students are able to incorporate them in their everyday lives! Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKvGgb3YcDQ
  • This instructional video is an audio reading of the book “What Does It Mean To Be Green?” which teaches children the multiple ways that they can “be green” by reducing, reusing, and recycling in their everyday lives, which helps save the world’s natural resources! • This graphic organizer would be used in a lesson towards the end of the thematic unit. As a class, we would work together to fill out the graphic organizer. I would have a copy projected onto the Smart Board, and each student would have their own physical copy in front of them. As a class, we would work together to channel all the information we have learned through our research on reducing, reusing, and recycling materials, and list them in the appropriate boxes next to each question. This visual will help enhance student understanding of the topic, because it depicts the earth with three separate thought bubbles. Each thought bubble asks a question that would help the earth to stay green and clean. The students will get the visual importance of these questions, and also importance and differences between reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling objects.
