Many students struggle financially or lack the necessary awareness of a healthy lifestyle, which leads to a neglect of healthy eating habits due to a lack of proper nutrition. Most college students consume unhealthy foods, which prevents them from receiving the nutrition they require to stay healthy. Students who are studying and are away from home choose fast food options because eating in healthy food restaurants is expensive. Many teenagers and university students consume unhealthy snacks such as French fries, pop, chocolates, and so on. Dining halls with automated equipment that serve unhealthy drinks and snacks manufactured from toxic ingredients can expose students to long-term illnesses and a variety of other diseases. Food carts set up in front of colleges lure students to make unhealthy choices rather than eat or prepare healthy food. Giving students access to a variety of healthy foods, primarily fruits, and vegetables, would be a healthier program for students and their well-being than giving them access to unhealthy foods, which would cause more issues in the future.
There would be no concerns about students eating fatty foods if schools and universities replaced them with healthy food, which would help them avoid being overweight or obese and enhance one‘s health and quality of life. In one of the recent studies, 24% of NYU students are overweight of which 6% are obese. (Vermeer, W. M., Steenhuis, I. M., Leeuwis, F. H., Heymans, M. W., & Seidell, J. C. (2011) As a result, if a student consumes low-quality food, he is more likely to develop digestive problems, type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart failure, and other maladies. Junk food has been compared to drugs and alcohol because it consists of sugars, salt, and saturated fats, which can be addictive. College students with financial difficulties work part-time to support their studies, and as a result, they are overburdened with homework and other obligations, making it difficult to make healthier choices. Students who eat healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, and seeds get the nutrition and energy they need to stay active throughout the day. Students who do not get enough nutrition are unable to focus on their studies, resulting in low grades most of the time. For students to improve their quality of life, it is critical to make changes in this area by providing education on a healthy diet, because health always comes first. By removing the availability of unhealthy foods and beverages, students will not only be prepared to eat healthier foods, however, the percentage of overweight and obese students, as well as the proportion of students who lack proper nutrition, will decrease dramatically, resulting in a healthy and convenient manner of food intake in colleges and universities, and so forth. Fast food is always less expensive than healthier options, so students opt for the less expensive option. That is why fast-food restaurants should incorporate healthy and nutritious foods into their menus, offering a wide range of healthy options for vegetarians and meat-eaters eaters alike. It would be preferable if restaurants raised the cost of unhealthy foods while keeping the prices of healthier foods low.
Students have become sicker and more obese over the last few decades because of a practice that has become very prevalent these days: skipping their main meals. Instead, students eat snacks that may be healthy or unhealthy; some eat chips, cookies, noodles, or no snacks at all, which is bad for the body and brain. All of this is influenced by poor time management, a
heavy workload of studies, and a lack of knowledge about prioritizing their responsibilities and needs. When college begins, students are faced with the challenge of organizing their schedules and fitting all of their responsibilities into a routine that is ideal for them. Students who perform poorly end up skipping meals and then eating massive amounts of food out of desperation. The majority of college students do not even have a daily schedule or even a weekly planner, which leads to the same problem of skipping meals, which causes them to overeat and consume unhealthy fast food and beverages. “Skipping meals can lead to fatigue, an inability to stay focused, and weight gain,” said Carly Jakstys, a registered dietician at the Campus Health Center. (“Nutrition Basics for College Students - Campus Health Center”). Unfortunately, some students do not have the luxury of eating multiple times per day due to a limited budget and inadequate financial support from their families. While some students consider skipping meals to be a weight-loss strategy, they are unaware of the negative impact it has on their mental and physical health. Another issue with skipping meals followed by hunger is that many students end up with lower grades, an inability to focus on their studies, or even having to repeat their grades. Eating breakfast and lunch is essential for improved academic performance; it all starts with proper nutrient intake. Nutrient deficiency has an impact on cognitive development and can have a negative impact on students’ physical and mental health. However, some students do not feel hungry because they consume snacks and unhealthy drinks throughout the day, which becomes their only source of energy for the entire day. To address this problem, which is prevalent in today's schools, it's a good idea to offer easy guidelines or post bulletin boards with suggestions such as: Eat smaller, more often meals throughout the day rather than missing meals; Always have a healthy snack on hand to tide you over until your next meal, such as yogurt, fruits, or granola bars; Snacking on high-protein, high-fiber snacks will keep you fuller for longer and help you focus and feel stronger throughout the day. Plan your meals ahead of time or prepare them the night before to avoid skipping meals because it is more convenient for you than waiting in line with other pupils. This type of information will serve to remind them of the importance of healthy eating and good habits. Overall, skipping meals is unhealthy for the body because it deprives it of many vitamins, proteins, and essential nutrients, resulting in long-term health issues.
Another issue that college students face is a poor financial situation, which can be caused by low wages, a lack of family support, or they may come from a poor family and receive limited assistance from organizations that do not meet all of their needs. College students also face food insecurity and housing instability, with some unable to buy food until their next paycheck, others sleeping at friends' homes or in cars, others living in substandard conditions, and the worst-case scenario is that some college students are homeless, resulting in a lack of proper nutrition. Because of this new pandemic that has flooded the entire planet, there has been an increase in low-income adults enrolling in colleges, public funding for higher education has decreased dramatically, and tuition rates are increasing on a daily basis, making it difficult for college students to cope with all of these problems. Between 2008 and 2017, funding for public colleges and universities decreased by nine billion dollars (Mitchell, M., Leachman, M., & Masterson, K. (2017, Aug. 23) The current Administration proposed a further cut of 7 billion dollars from
