How to Set Up a Temporary Address: A Step-by-Step Guide
Setting up a temporary change of address is like having your own personal assistant that keeps your mail and packages in check while you’re off exploring the world or juggling work on the go. One of the first steps in this process is completing an address form, either online or physically, to initiate mail forwarding. It’s not just a convenience. Mail forwarding is a smart move to keep things organized, secure, and stress-free. The key is picking and managing the right service so you never miss a beat.
Ready to make your temporary address work for you? Let’s break down everything you need to know to stay connected, no matter where life takes you.
Understanding Temporary Addresses
A temporary address is a short-term mailing solution designed to reroute your mail for a specific period, typically ranging from 15 days to one year. A temporary address change allows individuals to redirect mail and packages for short periods, ensuring a smooth transition by notifying relevant parties and setting up mail forwarding in advance. This setup is ideal for various situations, such as extended travel, temporary job assignments, medical treatments, or any other scenario where you need a flexible mailing option.
If you’re someone who works remotely or while traveling, you can understand the inconvenience of not being able to receive important documents on time. With over 17.3 million American digital nomads , a temporary address can be the ideal solution for receiving and forwarding mail and packages, as well as providing proof of residence.
Determining Your Need for a Temporary Address
What’s Your Purpose for Getting a Temporary Address?
Start by figuring out why you need an address temporarily. For example, if you’re a digital nomad traveling from country to country, you might need a place to receive important packages, such as new tech gear or essentials you forgot to pack. Or, if you’re a freelancer working on a project with tight deadlines, you may require a secure location for important documents or contracts. Providing an accurate mailing address is crucial to ensure proper mail handling and so you won’t miss anything important while you’re on the move. Knowing your specific purpose helps you choose a service that fits.
Decide on How Long You’ll Need The Temporary Address
Think about how long you’ll need this address and how often you’ll be getting mail. If you’re heading out for a two-week vacation, a temporary change of address might suffice to forward mail to your new location. But if you’re relocating for a few months, look for a more flexible option. For instance, if you’re moving to a new city for a job and expect to receive mail frequently, you’ll want a service that accommodates regular deliveries. Clear planning here means less hassle and more peace of mind while you travel, letting you focus on enjoying your journey instead of worrying about missed mail.
Choosing a Temporary Address Service
Research Available Providers
Start by looking into different temporary address providers. This step is crucial because you want a service that aligns with your specific needs and offers reliable support. Whether you’re a frequent traveler or a remote worker, finding the right provider can make all the difference in how smoothly you receive your mail. Explore various options to see which ones make the most sense for your particular situation.
Compare Features and Costs
Take the time to compare the features and costs of each service. Understanding what each provider offers, such as the option of using a virtual address for private mail forwarding for example, will help you get the best value for your money. Some services might include package forwarding, while others may offer secure document storage. Understanding the details lets you choose a service that fits your budget without sacrificing quality, ensuring you get exactly what you need for your temporary address.
Initial Steps to a Temporary Address Setup
Sign up for the service.
The first step is obvious, which is to sign up with your chosen temporary address provider to secure your new address for mail forwarding. This step makes everything official and ensures you know exactly where your mail will go.
Complete Required Documentation
You’ll need to fill out some paperwork, which typically includes an address form such as USPS Form 1583 to authorize the provider to handle your mail, a service agreement, a rental agreement for the address, and a change of address request with the U.S. Postal Service. This might sound tedious, but it’s a necessary step to comply with legal requirements and properly set up your address.
Provide Necessary Identification
You’ll need to provide identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or another government-issued ID, along with a secondary ID such as a utility bill or credit card statement. This is all part of the address process, which involves verifying your identity and ensuring your address isn’t misused. Getting these documents right ensures your mail is kept secure and delivered only to you, keeping your information safe.
Update Your Contact Information
Inform relevant parties.
Make sure to let the right people know about your temporary address, including your local post office, family, friends, clients, and any businesses that regularly send you mail. Since mail theft is unfortunately now so common, it’s extra important that your mail gets sent to the right place. If you’re a freelancer, update your clients so they can send important documents to the proper location. If you’re expecting packages or bills, notify the companies involved to avoid any missed deliveries. Keeping your contacts updated ensures smooth communication and uninterrupted mail flow.
Update Online Accounts and Services
Don’t forget to update your permanent address on your online accounts. This means going into your shopping sites, subscriptions, banking apps, and any other services where your address is stored. For example, if you regularly order items from Amazon or receive monthly subscriptions, updating your address will ensure everything arrives at your new, but temporary location. This quick step saves you from the hassle of lost packages or having to track down important deliveries.
Managing Your Temporary Address
Monitor Mail and Packages
Keep an eye on your mail and packages, especially priority mail, so nothing slips through the cracks while you’re away. Most service providers offer online dashboards or apps that let you view what’s coming in real time. For example, if you’re traveling for work or leisure and you’re expecting an important delivery such as a new credit card or a business contract, monitoring your mail helps you stay on top of things. This way, you never miss anything important, even if you’re halfway across the globe.
Utilize the Mail Forwarding Service
Decide if you want to forward your mail to your current location or pick it up when you get back. If you’re constantly on the move, forwarding your mail can keep you from missing important bills, documents, or packages. For example, if you’re spending a few months abroad, forwarding lets you receive everything, from your banking statements to personal letters, without a hitch. Additionally, you can request extended mail forwarding services for up to 24 months for permanent address changes, ensuring you stay flexible and keep your mail under control, no matter where you are.
End Service When No Longer Needed
All good things must come to an end. Once you’re no longer using the temporary address, make sure to end the service. This saves you from unnecessary charges and ensures your address is no longer active, keeping your information secure. Whether you’ve finally settled in a permanent spot or no longer need the extra address, closing the service keeps things tidy and avoids extra costs. It’s a simple step that wraps up your temporary address journey on the right note.
If you’ve made a permanent change of address, remember that this indicates your mail should be sent to a new location indefinitely. Ending the service for a temporary address is crucial to avoid confusion and ensure your mail is correctly routed.
Final Thoughts
Managing a temporary address doesn’t have to be complicated. Knowing your needs, choosing the right service, and staying on top of your mail will keep everything running smoothly no matter where life takes you. Each step, from setting up your address to closing it when you’re finished, plays a crucial role in keeping your communications seamless and secure.
Your temporary address can become a hassle-free solution that fits your lifestyle, whether you’re traveling for work, on an extended vacation, or just need a flexible mailing option. Stay organized, stay connected, and make your temporary address work for you.

A temporary change of address is ideal if you are relocating for 15 days to one year.
You can request a temporary change of address online or in person with the United States Postal Service.
Extended mail forwarding for more than 12 months is available for a small fee.
Reach out to your post office before you pack up your moving truck . If you’re considering a temporary move — 15 days to 12 months — you can file a temporary change of address (COA) order with the United States Postal Service (USPS). During this time, your mail and most other forms of correspondence will be forwarded to your new address based on the time frame specified in your request.
“An ideal situation where a person would benefit from a temporary change of address would be during a major natural disaster such as a tornado or hurricane, or for a temporary job assignment or extended vacation,” explained Jim McKean , a USPS senior public relations representative in Washington, D.C.
You can file a temporary COA request online or in person with USPS. A $1.10 fee is required for identity verification purposes. Typically, you can expect mail to arrive within seven to 10 postal business days after your requested start date. Even so, not everything can be forwarded to your temporary location.
More than 2,300 people have used one of the above companies to help them move homes in the past 30 days. International Van Lines is our most popular all-service mover, with 40% of people choosing IVL to help them move.
Where do you go to file a temporary change of address?
A temporary COA request can be filed in person at your local post office or online. Though the online method is more convenient, you must file your request in person if any of the following apply:
- You cannot verify your identity online using a credit or debit card
- You need to submit a request on behalf of someone else
- You’re relocating outside of the United States
Those who act as an “Authorized Agent” for someone else can submit a temporary change of address request in person at their local post office. You’ll need to bring an acceptable form of identification and either a birth certificate (for a minor) or Power of Attorney if filing on behalf of someone unable to act for themselves.
What are the steps to file a temporary change of address?
A USPS service worker can assist you with filing a temporary change of address in person. You’ll need to bring an acceptable photo ID such as a U.S. government-issued ID or passport, and the address must match either the new or old address notated on your request. USPS outlines all acceptable forms of identification on its website .
Ask the worker for a free Mover’s Guide packet to fill out the PS Form 3575.
Or, if you’ll be filing the request online, follow these steps:
Step 1: Gather the necessary information
Step 2: Visit the USPS Portal
Step 3: Verify your identity
Step 4: Check for an email confirmation
You’ll need your current and temporary address and the start and end dates for mail forwarding services.
The USPS Portal provides access to an online version of the temporary change of address form. Indicate whether the mail forwarding services will apply to you, your family (those living in your home with the same last name) or your business. You’ll be prompted to enter the address you’re moving from and the new address you’re moving to.
For a PO Box address, enter it in the street address field.
After submitting the form, USPS will request permission to send a verification code or link to your cell phone. This is the first step to verifying your identity. Next, you’ll need to pay the $1.10 identity verification fee using a credit or debit card registered with a billing address that matches your current or new address.
If your request is successful, USPS will email you a confirmation code. This code can be used to modify or cancel your order.
When a request cannot be processed online, an email containing a barcode will be sent. Bring this information with you to your local post office, along with an acceptable form of identification, and ask for help submitting a change of address request.
Which mail will be forwarded to your new address?
Just because you signed up for a temporary change of address doesn’t mean you will receive every single thing that landed in your mailbox. Here is what the USPS will and will not forward.
USPS will forward
USPS will not forward
For how long will USPS reroute my mail?
When you successfully submit a temporary COA request, USPS will forward mail to your new address for 15 days to 12 months. However, there are other mail-handling options to consider when the length of your absence falls outside this time frame.
Extended mail forwarding
If you need to extend your mail forwarding services beyond 12 months, you can purchase Extended mail forwarding. This allows you to extend the service for six, 12 or 18 more months, making 30 months the longest period of time you can have your mail rerouted to your temporary location.
Extended mail forwarding costs $19.95 for six months, $29.95 for 12 months and $39.95 for 18 months.
Premium mail forwarding
While having your mail forwarded piece by piece is the most cost-effective option, USPS will forward mail to your new address via weekly Priority Mail shipments if you sign up for its premium forwarding service.
To enroll in Premium Forwarding Service, the fee is $24.10 for online enrollment or $26.20 for in-person enrollment at the post office. Additionally, there is a charge of $26.20 for each week the service is active.
Hold mail service
For shorter absences from your primary residence — three to 30 days — you can have USPS place a hold on your mail. This service allows the postal service to retain your mail at your local Post for the duration you request.
You can submit a request to hold mail in advance, with a window of up to 30 days, or as soon as the next scheduled delivery day. Typically, requests for holding mail begin if filed by 3 a.m. ET on your requested start date, if submitted Monday through Saturday.
Tips for a smooth change of address
Once you file a temporary change of address, mail forwarding can begin within three business days of your submitted request, though it can take longer. “It’s best practice to request mail forwarding at least two weeks prior to you moving to ensure proper identity verification and processing of your Change of Address request,” McKean said.
If you are moving out of state, you may need to update your driver’s license. States such as Georgia and Florida require that individuals update their licenses within 30 days of moving to the state, though military service members and their families generally aren’t required to do so.
To change your license, locate the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in your new city. Check its website to confirm what documents are required and plan your visit to the DMV. Fees are generally imposed to switch a license from one state to another.
What’s next?
While most eligible mail will be forwarded for up to 12 months, or until your specified end date, periodicals will only be forwarded for up to 60 days. However, mail won’t be forwarded if the sender requests USPS to return it if it cannot be delivered to the intended address.
A temporary change of address only updates your mailing address with the USPS. To ensure uninterrupted mail and package delivery at your new location, it’s essential to manually update your address with all relevant government agencies, banks, insurance companies and businesses.
If you’re expecting an order from a package delivery company while you’re away, you’ll want to take precautions to keep it safe until your return. For example, UPS offers a service that lets you provide the delivery driver with instructions on where to leave your deliveries — such as at the back door, on the side of your home or with a neighbor.
Once you have your mail forwarding plans, turn your attention to other important aspects of your move, such as hiring a reputable long-distance moving company or auto shipping provider .

Planning a short-term move or an extended trip? Before you hire a moving company or book your tickets, consider filing an official U.S. Postal Service (USPS) change of address (COA) to ensure your mail reaches you at the right place and time. In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about filing a temporary change of address—including what it is, how it works, and why you might need to.
Steps to File a Temporary Change of Address
Follow these steps to file a temporary change of address and set up mail forwarding with the USPS.
Before initiating a temporary or permanent change of address order, make sure you have all the details and documentation you need. This includes your current address, your temporary new address, the effective date of your mail forwarding, and the end date.
The easiest way to file a change of address is online. Simply visit the official USPS website and navigate to the Change of Address section. Alternatively, you can file at your local post office using PS Form 3575.
Fill out the required information in the online form and follow the instructions to submit it electronically. To file in person, request a change of address form from the clerk at your local post office, fill it out, and then return it to the clerk.
If you file online, the USPS will send a one-time passcode or verification link to your mobile number. You will also have to pay a $1.10 identity verification fee via credit or debit card. Make sure the address associated with your card matches either your new or old address. If you file in person, bring a valid photo identification card, such as your driver’s license or passport.
After submitting the online form, you will receive a confirmation email. You will also receive a confirmation letter in the mail, regardless of how you file. Keep this documentation for your records. You will need the included confirmation number to modify or cancel your mail forwarding service.
Temporary Change of Address vs. Permanent Change of Address
USPS offers two ways to change your address—temporary and permanent. Both options allow you to forward mail to a new address, but the timeline will vary.
A permanent change of address notifies the post office that your new address is permanent. USPS will reroute mail to your new address indefinitely. This is often used when moving to a new home.
USPS recommends a temporary change of address if you are relocating for 15 days up to one year. After the confirmed end date, your carrier will deliver mail to the original address. This option is best for people going back to school or traveling.
Once the post office receives your change of address request, it can take between three to 10 business days for the temporary forwarding to go into effect. With that in mind, it’s best to file your request at least two weeks before you want your mail forwarding to begin.
Standard mail forwarding is not your only option. You can ask the post office to hold your mail until you return, or you can upgrade to its premium forwarding service. With premium mail forwarding, the postal service will hold mail for a week, bundle it together, and send it to you all at once by Priority Mail.
Several scenarios can lead an individual or family to change their address temporarily. Here are a few examples.
- Work assignments: You may need to change your address for a temporary job relocation or assignment in a different city or country. This will ensure important work-related documents arrive at the correct place.
- Extended vacations: If you plan to take a long vacation or travel for an extended period, you may temporarily change your address to keep mail from piling up at home.
- Medical treatments: You may want to file a temporary change of address before undergoing intensive medical treatment, such as in-patient rehab or chemotherapy. The same is true if you relocate to care for a relative during their treatment or recovery.
- Educational pursuits: Students attending college in a different city or country might choose to temporarily change their address so that important mail goes directly to them instead of their parents.
- Seasonal residences: Some families might have a summer home or migrate to different locations during certain times of the year, which requires a temporary change of address.
- Home renovations: A planned home renovation or emergency home repairs can force you to vacate your home temporarily. Filing a temporary change of address will save you the hassle of stopping by your house daily or weekly to pick up mail.
Whatever the reason for your temporary change of address, proactively notifying the post office will minimize your risk of missing critical mail or losing valuable packages. Setting up mail forwarding can provide peace of mind, allowing you to focus on your work assignment, enjoy your vacation, or prioritize your health without worrying about mail complications.
Here are a few tips to make sure your temporary change of address is as smooth as possible.
Taking advantage of the temporary change of address process will help you enjoy a stress-free move or extended absence without worrying about missing important mail. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily notify the post office of your temporary change of address and ensure your mail reaches you. Remember to notify important contacts, set up mail forwarding ahead of time, and double-check the accuracy of your address.
FAQ About a Temporary Change of Address
How long can you temporarily change your address.
You can temporarily change your address with the USPS for 12 months. This includes the initial six-month maximum for a temporary change of address plus the maximum six-month extension. After 12 months, you must wait at least 45 days to submit another change of address order or file a permanent change of address.
Can I change my address temporarily online?
Yes, you can change your address temporarily online. Visit the USPS website to begin the process.
What is the difference between a temporary change of address and mail forwarding?
The only difference between a temporary change of address and mail forwarding is the potential duration. The former refers to notifying the post office of a temporary move, while mail forwarding can be arranged for either a temporary or permanent move. However, these terms are often used interchangeably and refer to the same basic process.

Registering for a Temporary Address
- Filling Out the USPS Form : A USPS Change of Address form must be completed to begin the process.
- Identification Verification : You may need proof of identity to prevent fraud.
- Service Fees : A nominal fee is often required to prevent fraudulent address changes.
- Specifying Duration : Indicate how long the mail forwarding service should last.
Individuals must complete the appropriate form to activate temporary mail forwarding with the USPS. This involves providing personal details and specifying the period for which the service is required.
The USPS takes measures to verify identity to secure the process and charges a minimal fee, which also serves to deter fraudulent changes.
Forwarding Mail from the Original Address to the Temporary Address
- Effective Start Date : Customers select when the mail forwarding should commence.
- Labeled Mail : Returned mail will have a label indicating your new, temporary address.
- Optional Resending : Senders can resend mail to the forwarded address.
- Duration Validity : Temporary forwarding can typically last 15 days to 1 year.
- Extension Option : In certain circumstances, customers may extend the forwarding period.
Once the request is processed, mail forwarding to the temporary address will begin on the start date specified on the form.
Mail sent to the original address will be rerouted or returned with an updated label, signaling the new destination to the senders.
The duration of this service is flexible but is generally capped at one year, with options to extend under special conditions, ensuring customers remain connected to their mail stream regardless of location.
Forwarding Methods
1- automatic mail forwarding options.
- Standard Forwarding : The default service for fundamental mail redirection to the new address without the sender’s intervention.
- Premium Forwarding Service (PFS) : A service by PostScan Mail that forwards all mail in a single weekly package to the customer’s temporary address for a fee.
- E-Forwarding : Electronic forwarding notifies senders of the new email address and, in some cases, may convert physical mail to digital form.
The mechanism of automatic mail forwarding involves setting up a system that reroutes mail without the need for manual interference each time a mail is sent.
The PostScan Mail provides several methods, including standard mail forwarding, which offers a basic level of service, automatically redirecting each piece of mail to a new address.
A more comprehensive option is the Premium Forwarding Service . PostScan Mail consolidates and sends your mail weekly, making it ideal for those who move frequently or have significant mail volumes.
E-Forwarding services are increasingly popular, especially in business contexts, where incoming mail is scanned and delivered electronically, ensuring immediate access, regardless of physical location.
2- Manual Mail Forwarding Process
- Local Post Office Handling : In some cases, forwarding may require manual processing at the local post office.
- Change of Address Notification : Individuals should inform important contacts and businesses of their address change to manually update records.
- Intermediate Services : Third-party services can manage and forward mail according to customer specifications.
Manual mail forwarding is a process that requires more hands-on management. In certain situations, such as international moves or less accessible locations, the local post office staff may need to handle mail directly.
This process might be slower and less streamlined than automated services.
It’s prudent for individuals to personally notify key contacts — like financial institutions, friends, and family — of their new address to ensure mail is sent directly to the right place.
Some turn to third-party services that offer personalized mail handling, including sorting, scanning, and forwarding based on individual requirements for added control over mail delivery.
This bespoke mail forwarding approach can benefit businesses or individuals with complex or sensitive correspondence needs.
Whether one opts for an automatic or manual mail forwarding system depends on personal preference, the nature of the mail received, and the duration and reason for the relocation.
Both methods aim to ensure a seamless transition and continuity in receiving important documents and packages.
Notifying Contacts and Institutions
Informing friends, family, and essential contacts about the temporary address.
- Personal Communication : Contact close contacts directly to inform them of your new, temporary mailing address.
- Group Notifications : Utilize social media or group messaging tools to make a broad announcement to acquaintances.
- Special Attention : Pay particular attention to informing those who regularly mail you, including subscription services.
When moving, even briefly, it is essential to communicate the change of address to friends, family, and other important contacts.
Personalized messages or calls lend a touch of thoughtfulness and ensure that your loved ones are kept in the loop. For a broader reach, social media posts or email announcements can inform a wider circle of acquaintances.
I also want to inform you that identifying and communicating with those who mail you frequently is critical.
This includes any subscription services you might use – magazines, monthly club memberships, or regular deliveries – to avert potential mail disruptions or privacy concerns with unattended mail.
Updating mailing addresses with relevant institutions
- Financial Institutions : Update your address with all financial services, including banks, credit card companies, and investment firms.
- Government Agencies : Notify the necessary government bodies, like the IRS, Social Security Administration, and DMV, of your move.
- Healthcare Providers : Ensure healthcare practitioners, insurance companies, and pharmacies have your updated contact information.
- Commercial Companies : Remember to inform retailers and loyalty programs of your address change to continue receiving benefits and essential communications.
It’s imperative to systematically update your address information with all relevant organizations to maintain seamless operation of services, compliance, and communication.
Financial institutions, especially banks and credit card companies, require a current address for billing and to alert you to any suspicious activity.
Equally important are government agencies that need accurate records for tax purposes, identification, and voting registration, among other official functions.
Healthcare entities, including doctors’ offices, insurance companies, and local pharmacies, must know your location to send essential medical information and prescriptions.
By updating your address with commercial entities, you ensure continued access to rewards from loyalty programs, timely delivery of purchases, and personal correspondence like event invitations.
Throughout these changes, the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) mail forwarding service can serve as a stopgap, but there are more long-term solutions.
Proactively updating your contact details safeguards against disruptions and makes sure you stay connected during your temporary relocation.
Managing Forwarded Mail
Checking for new mail at the temporary address.
- Regular Checks: Ensure a routine check for new mail at your temporary residence.
- Email Confirmation: Look out for an email from the postal service confirming your change of address request.
- Direct Contact: If confirmation is not received or mail isn’t arriving, contact the postal service directly.
- Timing: It usually takes seven to 10 business days for mail to start being forwarded after the effective move date.
People relocating, even temporarily, must regularly check their new mail receptacle. This ensures that essential letters and packages are noticed during the transition period.
For physical checks, it is crucial to monitor email for confirmation of the address change request with the postal service.
The absence of such confirmation or lack of mail delivery within the expected time frame should prompt individuals to contact the postal service right away.
This helps establish a reliable mail flow to the temporary address, avoiding unnecessary disruptions or losses.
Organizing and Managing Forwarded Mail
- Sorting: Categorize mail into personal, financial, and business correspondence.
- Priority Handling: Address urgent mail immediately to avoid potential issues.
- Hold or Forward: Decide whether to hold mail at the post office or opt for forwarding services.
- Change of Address: File a temporary Change of Address (COA) with the postal service before moving.
Upon receiving forwarded mail at a new location, sorting and organizing all correspondence based on its nature and urgency is beneficial. Personal letters can be separated from potentially sensitive financial statements and business-related mail.
Critical documents or time-sensitive materials should be dealt with promptly to circumvent financial or legal complications.
Individuals must determine whether to temporarily hold their mail at the local post office or use mail forwarding services.
Before moving, this decision should be made, and the necessary arrangements should be made by filing a temporary Change of Address with the postal service.
By effectively managing forwarded mail, one can maintain continuity in communication and ensure no critical information is missed during their relocation.
Security and Privacy Considerations
Protecting personal information during mail forwarding process.
- Secure Services: Use trusted mail forwarding services that offer secure handling of your correspondence.
- Mail Screening: Does the service provide a screening option to discard junk or suspicious mail?
- Personal Data: Limit sharing sensitive personal information with the service, providing only required information.
- Encryption: Ensure that the service uses encrypted connections for any online interactions to protect your data.
The mail forwarding process inherently involves risk to your personal and sensitive information. Choosing a mail forwarding service recognized for its security and reliability is crucial to minimize this risk.
Some services provide the option to screen and filter incoming mail, allowing for the disposal of unsolicited or potential scam mail before it ever reaches your hands.
When engaging with mail forwarding services, provide the minor personal information necessary and confirm that digital communication or data storage is appropriately encrypted to protect against cyber threats.
Handling your mail with such precautions dramatically reduces the likelihood of identity theft and other privacy intrusions.
Safeguarding Against Potential Risks and Scams
- Verification: Verify all unexpected changes in mail delivery and avoid providing personal details via phone or email.
- Monitoring: Regularly monitor financial statements and be alert for any irregularities indicating mail interception.
- Phishing Awareness: Be wary of phishing emails pretending to be from postal services asking for sensitive information.
- Shred Documents: Shred any mail with personal details before disposal to prevent dumpster diving.
Being vigilant is critical to safeguarding against the risks associated with forwarding mail. Please always confirm any unexpected changes to your mail delivery directly with the postal service to ensure they are legitimate.
You can frequently check your financial statements to catch any discrepancies that may suggest your mail has been compromised.
Please be alert for phishing schemes that impersonate mail and delivery services to get your personal information.
Shredding documents containing sensitive information before disposal is a simple yet effective practice to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft through dumpster diving.
By adopting these practices, you can better protect yourself from potential risks and scams tied to the mail forwarding process.
Duration of Mail Forwarding
Determining the length of time for mail forwarding.
- Temporary Moves: USPS can forward mail from 15 days up to six months for customers relocating temporarily.
- Initial Duration: Standard mail forwarding is set for 12 months by default.
- Notification Responsibilities: Customers must notify their correspondents of the new address within this period.
- Effort to Inform: To prevent mail misdirection, reasonable effort must be made to inform contacts about the address change.
When a customer decides to move, whether for an extended holiday or a temporary job assignment, it is crucial to understand the USPS mail forwarding service durations.
The service is designed to provide great flexibility, accommodating those who require mail forwarding from a minimum of 15 days to a standard duration of 12 months.
This period is typically sufficient for most temporary relocations, allowing customers ample time to alert friends, family, and businesses of their new address.
Timely notification is vital, ensuring a smooth transition and continuous mail delivery without interruption.
Extending or terminating mail forwarding services
- Extension Options: Mail forwarding can be extended for 6, 12, or 18 additional months, with 18 months being the maximum extension.
- Extended Mail Forwarding: This service can be added during the initial change of address request or edited later.
- Long-term Relocation: If the stay at the temporary address exceeds six months, an extension is necessary to continue service.
- Purchasing Extensions: Extensions can be paid for and managed through the USPS website.
In cases where temporary relocation turns into a longer-term stay or if the individual still needs to complete their address change notifications within the original 12-month period, USPS offers the option to extend the forwarding service.
Customers can extend their mail forwarding in increments that suit their specific circumstances, ensuring they do not miss important correspondence.
Managing the extension is a straightforward process that can be completed online via the USPS portal. This convenience ensures that a reliable mail flow can be maintained regardless of how plans change.
Costs and Fees
Understanding the associated costs and fees of mail forwarding.
- Standard Mail Forwarding: The United States Postal Service (USPS) provides a standard mail forwarding service, which is generally free for a set duration.
- Premium Mail Forwarding Service (PMFS): This upgraded service consolidates all mail into a weekly package sent to a temporary address.
- Enrollment Fee: PMFS requires an initial enrollment fee of $21.95 when completed online or $23.90 if done in person.
- Weekly Costs: After enrollment, there is an ongoing weekly fee for the premium service, which is required to maintain forwarding.
- Businesses and Residents: Fees apply to residential and business customers opting for PMFS.
- Extended Services: Additional fees are incurred if the mail-forwarding period exceeds the initial duration and is extended.
The USPS ensures that individuals and businesses can choose a mail forwarding service that fits their needs and budget.
For those who prefer to receive their mail consolidated at a temporary location, the PMFS is an attractive option despite the additional fees.
It’s important to consider whether the convenience of receiving all mail in one package is worth the cost or if the standard service meets one’s requirements.
Comparing different temporary address service providers
When choosing a service provider for a temporary address, it’s vital to compare the basic and premium fees, the additional services offered, and the convenience of online management.
The USPS may be the most well-known option, and its PMFS can be a clear choice for many, yet alternative carriers can offer competitive rates and services that might be better suited to specific needs.
Reviewing and comparing available options thoroughly ensures the best and most cost-effective decision for mail forwarding services.

How to File a Temporary Change-of-Address With the USPS
Updated november 18, 2022.
A USPS temporary change-of-address is a way for the USPS to forward First-Class Mail and Periodicals to a specific address for a specifically requested amount of time. You’ll specify this amount of time during the change-of-address. After the specified time expires, you can then file a permanent change-of-address to forward your mail to your permanent address. Make sure to change your address with USPS two weeks before your next move to ensure enough time for everything to be filed correctly.
Be aware that a USPS temporary change-of-address does not include USPS Marketing Mail® or Package Services Mail. This checklist can help you notify the majority of your mailing contacts, and temporary mail forwarding will help you fill in the gaps.
How to file for temporary USPS mail forwarding online
As part of our exclusive relationship with the USPS, we help facilitate the official Change-of-Address process. We help millions of people forward their mail to their new address and connect them to deals from top brands.
Step 1: Go online to the MYMOVE & USPS Change-of-Address form
You can complete this form in just a few simple steps, and it helps you file the correct change-of-address for your particular situation.
Step 2: Specify who’s moving
Are you filing a change-of-address for your family? For your business? Make sure to let USPS know who the change-of-address request is for.
Step 3: USPS know that it’s a temporary move
To ensure that your mail is delivered for the requested period of time, select the temporary change-of-address option instead of the permanent one.
Step 4: Fill out your old and new addresses and submit the form
Simply fill out your current address and the new temporary address that you want your mail to be forwarded to.
Step 5: Pay the identity verification fee
Have your debit or credit card ready to pay the $1.10 identity verification fee. The USPS uses this fee to prevent fraud by making sure that your debit or credit card info matches up with who you’re claiming to be.
Step 6: Keep an eye out for your Move Validation Letter
After entering your information and paying the identity verification fee, you’ll receive a Move Validation Letter within five days of the change-of-address going into effect. There will also be a code, which you can use to cancel the request online without going into your local post office.
You can sign up for premium mail forwarding
With normal temporary mail forwarding, you only receive First-Class Mail, coupons, and marketing materials. However, Premium Mail Forwarding is a way to get all of your mail, no matter what it is, delivered to your temporary change-of-address in one complete package. Though this is still temporary mail forwarding, it can ensure that you’re getting all of your mail.
Premium Mail Forwarding has an enrollment fee and a fee for every week of service after it. The fee is $21.95 if you file online , and $23.90 if you file in person at the post office. Regardless of how you enroll, each subsequent week will cost $23.90 . Premium Mail Forwarding is available for both residential and business services and is a great way to wrap up all of your professional mail in one package.
The bottom line
Filing for temporary USPS mail forwarding is easy, inexpensive, and you can opt in for Premium Mail Forwarding to make sure you receive all of your mail. Just be sure to carefully select the right plan for you and everyone in your household.
Remember that this process is temporary , and you will need to set up a permanent change-of-address when you move into your new home.
