Plan ahead. Although mail forwarding may begin within 3 business days of your submitted request, it's best to allow up to 2 weeks. Mail will be forwarded to your new address as it comes, piece by piece.

What Mail Is Forwarded

  • First-Class ™ mail and periodicals (newsletters and magazines) are forwarded for free.
  • Priority Mail Express ® , Priority Mail ® , and USPS Ground Advantage ® items are forwarded for free.
  • Media Mail ® items are forwarded, but you must pay the cost for shipping from your local Post Office ™ location to your new address.
  • USPS Marketing Mail ® is not forwarded.

Your change of address order only changes your mailing address with the Post Office. You must still update government agencies (like for your benefits, driver's license, and voter registration) and companies (like banks, insurance, online stores, etc.).

You must submit your change of address request in person at a Post Office location if:

  • You're moving outside the United States

How to Change Your Address Online

  • Go to the Official USPS Change of Address® website.
  • Choose an option for either an "Individual," "Family" (where everyone has the same last name), or "Business" move, and complete the form.
  • Verify your identity: Opt in online to receive a verification code or link on your mobile phone.
  • Pay the $1.10 identity verification fee. The billing address on your credit card must match either your old or new address.
  • You'll get a Move Validation letter to the address you’re moving from (your "old" address)
  • About 5 business days before your change of address start date, you'll get a Customer Notification Letter (with your confirmation code) to your "new" address. You'll also get a welcome kit with coupons from USPS partners.
  • Mail will be rerouted to your new address piece by piece.
  • If you can’t verify your identity online: USPS will send you an email with instructions and a barcode. Bring the email along with acceptable photo ID to a local Post Office location.

U.S. Military Moves: For U.S. military moves, first work with your command ; your AMPS relocation info will automatically be shared with USPS. If you still need to submit a change of request with USPS, you can do so either in person or online. For online requests, if you are moving from a military address, your email address must end in .gov, .mil, or .edu. Important note: If you need to verify your identity in person, you can only do so at Post Office locations in the 50 states and Puerto Rico. If you are outside of the U.S., you cannot verify your identity in-person and won’t be able to submit a change of address with USPS.

Reach out to your post office before you pack up your moving truck . If you’re considering a temporary move — 15 days to 12 months — you can file a temporary change of address (COA) order with the United States Postal Service (USPS). During this time, your mail and most other forms of correspondence will be forwarded to your new address based on the time frame specified in your request.

“An ideal situation where a person would benefit from a temporary change of address would be during a major natural disaster such as a tornado or hurricane, or for a temporary job assignment or extended vacation,” explained Jim McKean , a USPS senior public relations representative in Washington, D.C.

You can file a temporary COA request online or in person with USPS. A $1.10 fee is required for identity verification purposes. Typically, you can expect mail to arrive within seven to 10 postal business days after your requested start date. Even so, not everything can be forwarded to your temporary location.

Where do you go to file a temporary change of address?

A temporary COA request can be filed in person at your local post office or online. Though the online method is more convenient, you must file your request in person if any of the following apply:

  • You cannot verify your identity online using a credit or debit card
  • You need to submit a request on behalf of someone else
  • You’re relocating outside of the United States

Those who act as an “Authorized Agent” for someone else can submit a temporary change of address request in person at their local post office. You’ll need to bring an acceptable form of identification and either a birth certificate (for a minor) or Power of Attorney if filing on behalf of someone unable to act for themselves.

What are the steps to file a temporary change of address?

A USPS service worker can assist you with filing a temporary change of address in person. You’ll need to bring an acceptable photo ID such as a U.S. government-issued ID or passport, and the address must match either the new or old address notated on your request. USPS outlines all acceptable forms of identification on its website .

The USPS Portal provides access to an online version of the temporary change of address form. Indicate whether the mail forwarding services will apply to you, your family (those living in your home with the same last name) or your business. You’ll be prompted to enter the address you’re moving from and the new address you’re moving to.

For a PO Box address, enter it in the street address field.

After submitting the form, USPS will request permission to send a verification code or link to your cell phone. This is the first step to verifying your identity. Next, you’ll need to pay the $1.10 identity verification fee using a credit or debit card registered with a billing address that matches your current or new address.

If your request is successful, USPS will email you a confirmation code. This code can be used to modify or cancel your order.

When a request cannot be processed online, an email containing a barcode will be sent. Bring this information with you to your local post office, along with an acceptable form of identification, and ask for help submitting a change of address request.

Which mail will be forwarded to your new address?

Just because you signed up for a temporary change of address doesn’t mean you will receive every single thing that landed in your mailbox. Here is what the USPS will and will not forward.

For how long will USPS reroute my mail?

When you successfully submit a temporary COA request, USPS will forward mail to your new address for 15 days to 12 months. However, there are other mail-handling options to consider when the length of your absence falls outside this time frame.

Extended mail forwarding

If you need to extend your mail forwarding services beyond 12 months, you can purchase Extended mail forwarding. This allows you to extend the service for six, 12 or 18 more months, making 30 months the longest period of time you can have your mail rerouted to your temporary location.

Extended mail forwarding costs $19.95 for six months, $29.95 for 12 months and $39.95 for 18 months.

Premium mail forwarding

While having your mail forwarded piece by piece is the most cost-effective option, USPS will forward mail to your new address via weekly Priority Mail shipments if you sign up for its premium forwarding service.

To enroll in Premium Forwarding Service, the fee is $24.10 for online enrollment or $26.20 for in-person enrollment at the post office. Additionally, there is a charge of $26.20 for each week the service is active.

Hold mail service

For shorter absences from your primary residence — three to 30 days — you can have USPS place a hold on your mail. This service allows the postal service to retain your mail at your local Post for the duration you request.

You can submit a request to hold mail in advance, with a window of up to 30 days, or as soon as the next scheduled delivery day. Typically, requests for holding mail begin if filed by 3 a.m. ET on your requested start date, if submitted Monday through Saturday.

Tips for a smooth change of address

Once you file a temporary change of address, mail forwarding can begin within three business days of your submitted request, though it can take longer. “It’s best practice to request mail forwarding at least two weeks prior to you moving to ensure proper identity verification and processing of your Change of Address request,” McKean said.

If you are moving out of state, you may need to update your driver’s license. States such as Georgia and Florida require that individuals update their licenses within 30 days of moving to the state, though military service members and their families generally aren’t required to do so. 

To change your license, locate the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in your new city. Check its website to confirm what documents are required and plan your visit to the DMV. Fees are generally imposed to switch a license from one state to another.

What’s next?

While most eligible mail will be forwarded for up to 12 months, or until your specified end date, periodicals will only be forwarded for up to 60 days. However, mail won’t be forwarded if the sender requests USPS to return it if it cannot be delivered to the intended address.

A temporary change of address only updates your mailing address with the USPS. To ensure uninterrupted mail and package delivery at your new location, it’s essential to manually update your address with all relevant government agencies, banks, insurance companies and businesses.

If you’re expecting an order from a package delivery company while you’re away, you’ll want to take precautions to keep it safe until your return. For example, UPS offers a service that lets you provide the delivery driver with instructions on where to leave your deliveries — such as at the back door, on the side of your home or with a neighbor.

How to File a Temporary Change-of-Address With the USPS

A USPS temporary change-of-address is a way for the USPS to forward First-Class Mail and Periodicals to a specific address for a specifically requested amount of time. You’ll specify this amount of time during the change-of-address. After the specified time expires, you can then file a permanent change-of-address to forward your mail to your permanent address. Make sure to change your address with USPS two weeks before your next move to ensure enough time for everything to be filed correctly.

Be aware that a USPS temporary change-of-address does not include USPS Marketing Mail® or Package Services Mail. This checklist can help you notify the majority of your mailing contacts, and temporary mail forwarding will help you fill in the gaps.

How to file for temporary USPS mail forwarding online

Step 6: Keep an eye out for your Move Validation Letter

After entering your information and paying the identity verification fee, you’ll receive a Move Validation Letter within five days of the change-of-address going into effect. There will also be a code, which you can use to cancel the request online without going into your local post office.

However, Premium Mail Forwarding is a way to get all of your mail, no matter what it is, delivered to your temporary change-of-address in one complete package. Though this is still temporary mail forwarding, it can ensure that you’re getting all of your mail. 

Premium Mail Forwarding has an enrollment fee and a fee for every week of service after it. The fee is $21.95 if you file online , and $23.90 if you file in person at the post office. Regardless of how you enroll, each subsequent week will cost $23.90 . Premium Mail Forwarding is available for both residential and business services and is a great way to wrap up all of your professional mail in one package.
