From Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat to Simmba and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Ranveer Singh has had multiple successful films in his career. But, the actor has also seen failures in the form of Kill Dil and Jayeshbhai Jordaar too. However, the biggest flop in Ranveer Singh's career has been the 2022 film Cirkus.
Directed by Rohit Shetty, the period comedy drama Cirkus featured Ranveer Singh in a double role for the first time in his career. Varun Sharma also played double roles. The two leading ladies in the film were Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez. Cirkus also starred a bunch of comedy actors such as Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Siddhartha Jadhav, Murali Sharma, Vrajesh Hirjee, and Tiku Talsania among others and every one of them failed to make audiences laugh.

What went wrong with Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus at the box office? Trade experts claim it was lack of humour, lacklustre music and missing masala content
A lot was expected from Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus . But sadly, the film had an underwhelming opening and due to poor word of mouth, it never had a jump in the weekends. On Monday, it fell more than 50% than on Friday, which sealed its fate.
We asked trade experts what went wrong. Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi replied, “The answer lies in the question. The film is what went wrong. There’s a certain expectation that people have from Rohit Shetty. People expect a great emotional graph in terms of moments of laughter, drama etc. That is what the film lacked. Its humour was fairly platonic and storytelling. I didn’t mind watching it but the masala and fun you expect in a Rohit Shetty film wasn’t there in ample doses”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “There were multiple reasons. Firstly, the trailer is always the first impression. That was not received very well by the viewers. The expectations were humongous as it brought together Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh after Simmba (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021). Secondly, the trailer was launched with a lot of fanfare but the subsequent promotion did not enhance the buzz for the film. Though people liked Deepika Padukone’s song, it did not become a rage. The remaining songs just didn’t work. Both these factors affected the advance. The trade and industry assumed that Cirkus would score through spot bookings and picture dekh ke log taarif karenge . But the biggest nail in the coffin was the first day. It proved to be a complete spoilsport.”
He continued, “Something went wrong this time. People were laughing and smiling on screen but off screen, the audiences watching it were not laughing and smiling. The humour fell flat and it was supposed to be a comedy. In my opinion, the show belonged to Sanjay Mishra and Johny Lever. For me, they are the heroes, not Ranveer Singh.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan explained, “Earlier, people were in the habit of keeping their brains at home. Aaj kal public bahut dimaag lagane lagi hai . First, they watch the trailer and then decide whether they want to see a particular film. Before, the situation was different. A film, starring an actor and director with a huge following, would always arouse curiosity irrespective of the trailer. Now, it’s no longer the case. The audience has even become price-sensitive. There was a time when tickets used to be priced at Rs. 140 and Rs. 150 in many theatres. There would be at least some audience in the morning shows. Even after the negative word of mouth would spread, viewers used to go and watch the film. A film like Dabangg 3 (2019) had poor response and yet did a business of Rs. 146.11 crores. Tab log sochte the ki ‘kharaab hogi toh bhi kit ni kharaab hogi yeh film’. Now, the audience totally just rejects it, that too from day 1. In fact, nowadays, the audience either rejects from the first day or accepts the film from the first show.”
Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, shared, “Since the time the film was announced, the title and the fact that it reportedly was a remake of Angoor (1982) gave the impression ki kuch toh gadbad hai . Those who have seen the film have complained that though it’s marketed as a comedy film, it doesn’t have much comedy. So somewhere the director went wrong with the script.”
A disappointing year for Pooja Hegde
Cirkus was Pooja Hegde’s fourth release this year. Just like Cirkus , Radhe Shyam and Acharya also flopped. Beast has been declared a success but got a negative response. As a result, the actress is being trolled for giving four bad films, that too with big stars.
Atul Mohan felt such kind of trolling was not justified, “It’s not fair. There are very few heroines in the industry and she’s one of them. All these things don’t matter much”
Akshaye Rathi noted, “Before Wanted (2009), Salman Khan had a string of flops back-to-back. But look what happened to his career after that! Every actor goes through highs and lows. I am sure with the right kind of films and the right kind of choices; she will bounce back all over again. Fingers crossed. We need more bankable talent that can score at the box office and that can really spruce up the value of a film. I truly hope that not just Pooja Hegde but many more actors and actresses manage to achieve in the near future.”
Taran Adarsh said, “When you are on social media, then you have to be prepared for such brickbats. And when you have delivered flops, then this is bound to happen. Agar taarif mili hai , toh gaali bhi milegi .”
Raj Bansal, meanwhile, had no qualms in saying, “I don’t consider Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez as actresses. This is her fourth flop. I don't know why producers are casting her.”
To conclude
Taran Adarsh signed off by stating, “Normally, Cirkus would have been over by the weekend but now, the only advantage is that it has a long period of holidays till January 1. But the excitement among people is minimal. On Christmas day, it managed to collect just Rs. 8 crores. That’s a shocker. You can’t give excuses like cold wave, examinations etc. A film like Drishyam 2 picked up in its sixth week. Avatar: The Way Of Water is doing phenomenal business.”
Atul Mohan suggested that the team of the film, especially Ranveer Singh, should move on, “Did anybody expect Ranveer’s Gully Boy (2019) to do Rs. 140.25 crores? Hence, some films at times unexpectedly do too well while some films unexpectedly even fail. It’s all part and parcel of this business.”

Cirkus box office collection Day 1: Rohit Shetty gets worst opening in 10 years as Avatar 2 outshines Ranveer Singh comedy
Cirkus box office collection: ranveer singh and rohit shetty fail to create the same magic at the ticket counters as they did with their first outing together, simmba..
Rohit Shetty’s comedy caper Cirkus was being touted as the last big film of a year that hasn’t been too kind to Bollywood. Trade experts were expecting the film to end a mostly disappointing year on a positive note. But it seems like Shetty’s magic wand has not worked this time around. The film, led by Ranveer Singh, has failed to get a solid opening at the ticket counters.
Cirkus opened with low occupancy in the morning and afternoon shows, and couldn’t attract the audience in the evening. It earned in the range of Rs 6.35 to Rs 7.35 crore on its opening day, reported Bollywood Hungama. The figure is almost half of what it was expected to earn. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh was of the view that Shetty always ‘surprises’ the audience and one must not ‘underestimate’ his power of pulling crowds to theatres.
Cirkus has delivered Rohit Shetty’s worst opening in a decade. His last release, Sooryavanshi, which came out in the theaters amid the pandemic, also made a double-digit opening (Rs 26.29 cr.). The 2018 release Simmba did a business of Rs 20.72 cr on day one. Golmaal Again also got a phenomenal opening (Rs 30.14 cr) and so did Dilwale (Rs 21 cr), Singham Returns (Rs 32.09 cr), and Chennai Express (Rs 33.12 cr.).
Cirkus, which hasn’t got good reviews from critics, has also suffered at the ticket counters because of strong competition from James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water . The film, which is in its second week now, did better business on its second Friday than Cirkus. It earned in the range of Rs 11.50-Rs 13.50 crore.
Now, the only hope for Cirkus is the audience swamping the theaters during the festive period of Christmas and New Year. If isn’t able to do that, it will mark the third flop in a row for Ranveer Singh .
The Indian Express ’ Shubhra Gupta found the movie to be “surprisingly blah”. In her 1.5 star-rated review, she mentioned, “Revving up the livewire Ranveer Singh up with ‘bijli ke jhatke’ is so extra that it should have induced non-stop, over-the-top hilarity, Shetty ishtyle. But the gags don’t land; neither does, for the most part, the lead star.”

Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement after the 3rd Test of the Border Gavaskar trophy at the Gabba. He posted a selfie on Instagram with a quote, "Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened." Ashwin's decision to retire in the middle of the series raised eyebrows, especially since the fifth Test would favour spinners.

Cirkus Review: Now Streaming on Netflix, the Rohit Shetty-Ranveer Singh film is the Worst Film of 2022
Director : Rohit Shetty
Writers : Farhad Samji, Sanchit Bedre, Vidhi Ghodgaonkar
Cast : Ranveer Singh, Varun Sharma, Sanjay Mishra, Pooja Hegde, Jaqueline Fernandez
Having seen the posters and heard the promotional chatter for Cirkus , you may have arrived at the conclusion that Rohit Shetty ’s new film is a comedy. This is not true. Despite a cast made up of some of Indian cinema’s funniest comic actors including Johnny Lever, Tiku Talsania, Sanjay Mishra , Brijendra Kala and Varun Sharma, Cirkus is a tragedy — for the audience that will never get back the 138 minutes it gave this film; and for Ranveer Singh, who showed more of his livewire chemistry in that nude photoshoot than he does with this double role, despite one of the characters being named “Electric Man”.
It’s difficult to outline the plot of Cirkus because there really isn’t one. The film has three sets of men named Roy and Joy — one set runs an orphanage; another runs a circus; the last one just runs around. Two of the Roy-Joys are twins who are separated at birth and it takes 28 years for their paths to cross, much to the confusion of some petty thieves, a jeweller and a taxi driver (among others). Despite borrowing many elements from Gulzar ’s Angoor (1982), Cirkus has none of its zany charm. However, if you’re looking for it, there are a few feeble indications that at some point, there was a modicum of thought that went into the making of Cirkus . For instance, Shetty begins the film in 1942, setting it in a fabricated past that is as neat and fake as Noddy’s Toyland. All the colours pop with vivid, artificial intensity. Everyone looks animated and everything looks tip-top. Yet even in this idyll of super-saturation, there lurks discontent. There are protestors on the streets carrying ‘Quit India’ signs and there’s a doctor who dreams of a society in which people see the humanity in each other, rather than labels of class, religion etc. etc. Yes, dear reader, Cirkus is a Rohit Shetty film with a Social Message. Hold on to your popcorn.
As a social-science experiment, a doctor switches babies who are being adopted and separates two sets of twins, both of whom are named Roy ( Ranveer Singh ) and Joy (Varun Sharma). One Roy-Joy set is adopted by a wealthy business family in Bangalore while the other goes to a couple who run a circus. (Incidentally, there is an excellent documentary titled Three Identical Strangers about a similar experiment that was actually carried out in America. It’s available on Netflix, which happens to be the platform where Cirkus will also land eventually.) Circus Roy discovers he’s immune to electric shocks and becomes the star attraction, “Electric Man”. He has no idea that miles away in Bangalore, there’s another Roy who turns into a literal livewire every time Circus Roy grabs an electric cable. Years pass with Circus Roy wrapping his fists around electric wires and his twin getting electrified. Finally, when the twins are four grown men with twinning moustaches, the two sets of Roy-Joys meet people who know one set of Roy-Joy and mistake them for the other Roy-Joy. This happens in an Ooty whose rolling hills are such a lurid green that it looks like The Incredible Hulk vomited all over them. Either that or Cirkus ’s post-production team couldn’t be bothered and just plastered Windows’ desktop wallpaper as the background. They’re not the only ones who lost interest in the film. Topping that list are Shetty and Singh.
You’d think that Singh would light up the screen with this double role and ace the slapstick comedy, but the actor’s performance is a power cut. Since his charming debut in Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Singh has been an actor who can energise even the most limp plot with his screen presence. In Cirkus , Singh’s acting is about as convincing as Jaqueline Fernandez’s — in fact, she might be a bit more animated than Singh in a few scenes. For the first time in his career , Singh is both overshadowed by co-actors and also entirely forgettable. In the past, his irrepressible, over-the-top energy and Shetty’s mastery over the commercial spectacle have felt like a match made in Bollywood heaven. Cirkus looks like a film the two made under duress after a break-up. Singh seems to be sleepwalking through his scenes and perhaps to compensate for this, the supporting cast of comic actors, particularly Sanjay Mishra, try to liven Cirkus with their exaggerated turns. Halfway in, Singh seems to exit the plot and the supporting cast takes over (Siddhartha Jadhav may have more lines than Singh does). This doesn’t redeem the film, which trundles along with listless stupidity. Shetty packs scene after scene with some of Hindi cinema’s most beloved comic actors, but not one punchline lands and the situational comedy is painfully humourless. There’s a shout-out to Golmaal at the end of the film which feels like a desperate attempt to do some fan service, but Rohit Shetty fans deserve better.
With Cirkus , Shetty and Singh have delivered the worst film of the year. That this director-actor duo would make a comedy that’s so boring that audience members at an advance screening would rather play Candy Crush or send WhatsApp messages like “Not much going on wid me. U?”, is deeply disappointing. The only possible silver lining of Cirkus is that by the end of it, you’ve got to feel better about yourself because chances are, your 2022 is less of a flop than what Shetty and Singh have delivered.

‘Cirkus’: Review
By Namrata Joshi 2022-12-23T16:29:00+00:00
Rohit Shetty’s extravagant take on ’The Comedy Of Errors’ is an exercise in excess
Source: Reliant Entertainment
Dir: Rohit Shetty. India. 2022. 112min
Bollywood star director Rohit Shetty’s big Christmas release Cirkus, about two pairs of identical twins, is more a case of double disaster than twice the fun. One would presume that, in looking to Shakespeare for inspiration, you’d have a safe story to fall back on. But here, and despite the presence of four credited writers (three for dialogue alone) the Bard’s ’The Comedy of Errors’ is turned into an unsalvageable hodgepodge.
An excruciatingly inane ride in which nothing makes much sense
Bollywood has had a disastrous 2022 with a string of big budget flops, and has been beaten on home turf by successful films from South India, in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages. It has had to contend with a backlash from conservative right-wing forces and constant threat of bans and boycott calls from amorphous moral police. Much hope rested on Cirkus , directed by the industry’s hit-making machine Shetty; there was an expectation that his latest film, which releases in India and other territories on December 23, would see the industry begin 2023 on a high. Yet it feels more like another big miss than a likely hit.
Two sets of twins, both called Roy (played by Ranveer Singh) and Joy (played by Varun Sharma), have been unwittingly swapped at birth and, as adults, become embroiled in a series of comic mishaps arising from mistaken identity. One set of twins owns a circus in the hill town of Ooty in South India, in which this Roy performs an eyeroll of an electric act which has a direct impact on his long-lost twin brother, living miles away in Bangalore. Circus-owning Roy’s wife Mala (Pooja Hegde) can’t conceive and is desperate to adopt, while he puts much store in bloodline and lineage.
In Bangalore, the other Roy is under the scrutiny of the father of his girlfriend Bindu (Jacqueline Fernandez), and all hell breaks loose when he visits Ooty to buy a tea estate and is mistaken for his brother. Confusion is increased by a gang of crooks that has an eye on the cash he is carrying for the business deal. The resulting narrative is an excruciatingly inane ride in which nothing makes much sense. It’s enough to make you long for the other versions of The Comedy Of Errors in Hindi cinema —Debu Sen’s Do Dooni Chaar ( Two Twos Are Four , 1968) and Gulzar’s Angoor (1982) — both witty written and winsomely acted.
Cirkus , however, is populated by annoying characters played rough and loud by some of Hindi cinema’s otherwise reliable actors including Sanjay Mishra and Johnny Lever. In his double role, Singh looks disinterested rather than invested, and Hedge and Fernandez have little else to do other than being arm candy and dance partners.
Excessiveness extends to every aspect of the film; the over-the-top production design, the overwrought period setting, kitschy sets, exaggerated costumes and utterly forgettable music. Even nature feels oversaturated in the film’s frames. Ooty’s verdant cover, in the brightest shade of green, seems to have been put under some odd photo filter. So fluorescent and saturated is the colour palette that the eyes sting.
Worst, however, is the liberty Shetty takes in using some of the most beloved Hindi classic songs, strewing the original versions indiscriminately — and, at times disrespectfully — throughout various points in the film.

Why was Ranveer Singh's Cirkus rejected so summarily by the audience?
An intelligent estimate makes Cirkus one of the biggest disasters in recent times.
There are the flops. Then there are the historic flops, like Cirkus . The losses are yet to be computed. But an intelligent estimate makes Cirkus one of the biggest disasters in recent times.
Trade guru Taran Adarsh feels Cirkus had it coming. “There are multiple reasons why Cirkus did not take off. First and foremost, the trailer failed to create any impact whatsoever. The first impression has to be solid, which was missing in this case. Two, every Rohit Shetty film is eagerly awaited, but not just the trailer, even the songs (barring one) or the subsequent promotional activities failed to create any impact. Three, the content of the film was an absolute downer. People expect loads of fun and entertainment in a Rohit Shetty movie, which, sadly, was missing in Cirkus . The jokes were flat and the comedy of errors just didn’t work. Even the performances of the lead actors, mainly Ranveer Singh , lacked enthusiasm. The show clearly belonged to Sanjay Mishra and Johny Lever.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan agrees with Taran. “The indication started coming in right from the moment the trailer came out. It was not appreciated or liked by the audience. But at the same time, the trailers of Rohit Shetty films have always been weak but they always generated the necessary hype which transformed into big opening numbers. But this time it didn’t work the trick. Post-pandemic the audience has become excessively selective. If the first impression goes wrong then you have low chances of bouncing back. Earlier the people at least used to come to cinemas on the first day and then the fate of the film was decided upon its merits. Rejection or selection happened after the first couple of shows. But now the scenario is different.”
Atul also blames Ranveer Singh’s controversial image for the Cirkus fiasco. “There are talks that Ranveer Singh post-nude photo campaign has devalued his image and standing. The bad reviews pouring in immediately after the first show started the downslide of the film. Already a hit in India, Avatar became the first choice for audience in its second weekend too.”
For producer and trade analyst Girish Johar, the disappointment of seeing Cirkus bite the dust was tremendous. “For me personally, expectations from Cirkus was sky high, it had everything going for it. Mammoth cast, huge mounting, top commercial and most successful director, perfect release period, no competition from other releases and audiences were looking forward to neat clean mad family comedy from Rohit Shetty. But I believe things went downhill the moment the trailer was released. There was no connect, film looked lavish but with no soul. The comedy couldn’t tickle or even tease the audiences for more. Further, the songs released, even of Deepika & later others, took the expectations more downhill. So the audiences simply avoided it. It got a project kind of a feel rather than being a typical Rohit Shetty branded entertainer, which audiences are completely avoiding, no matter what cast is headlining it.”
Girish feels Avatar also played villain for Cirkus. “ Avatar 2 was lapped up despite higher ticket of it. Clearly, people chose Avatar 2 for their Christmas cinema outing. This is one of those rare films which Rohit Shetty has backfired but he has enough solid armoury to light up the screen with his next outing, which everyone is so much looking forward to.”
Trade analyst Amod Mehra lays the blame for the failure squarely on Rohit Shetty. “The only reason I can contribute to the failure of Circus is Rohit Shetty.. not only he actually started believing he is the ultimate director but this misconception led to arrogance and misconception. He should avoid flattery and concentrate on making good cinema .. good cinema will get him success”
