The literature of the Philippines shows the European, North American and Asian colonial legacy of the country, hence the diverse and richness of the written works that it contains. These literary pieces could be interpreted in various ways that could help understand how those influences shaped Philippine literature and contributed to the nation’s history and traditions over the years. The study sought to explore the literary works of the Philippines, particularly short stories. Narrative Analysis, specifically Gerard Genette’s theory of Narratology with four analytical categories — narrative mood, narrative instance, narrative levels, and narrative time was used in interpreting the selected 32 short stories from the American to the Contemporary period. After a thorough analysis of the selected pieces, the study was able to determine that predominantly, Filipino writers from the time specified followed a varied manner in the act of narrating, employed a heterodiegetic voice, extradiegetic in its embedded narratives and a fair incorporation of singulative, repetitive and iterative components. Through the analysis, it was found that the narrative mood, instance, time, and level that were found in each literary piece were represented in both distinct and relative manner. The researchers recommend to the administrators in education to utilize studies as means to structure other similar studies to help provide more evaluation and inquiries to the Philippine literary works and for future researchers to produce more credible and generous sources about the interpretation, survey and analysis of the different literary pieces in the Philippines from the previous eras to the Contemporary time.

The Literary Output of the Filipinos through the Centuries: A Look at the Approaches and Periodizations of Ten Anthologies in Philippine Literature
Numerous books had already been published about Philippine Literature with an attempt to categorize history or divide time into named blocks or provide a survey with a different approach to the literatures of the Philippines. The result is descriptive abstraction that provides convenient terms for periods of time with relatively stable characteristics. Literature, being the conglomeration of the changing voices of the people and a reflection of the conditions and accidents of time, is continuous and cannot be generalized and such makes systems of periodization and approaches more or less arbitrary. Named periods and varying approaches become an essential tool because they offer a framework in making us understand and appreciate the literary output of the Filipinos through the centuries. Philippine Literature, together with History, would not be nothing more than scattered events with periodization though sometimes overlapping considering the schemes of tentative named periods. This paper is to look at ten anthologies in Philippine Literature and how each anthologies' periodizing labels and approaches are challenged and redefined by the other bulk of anthologies produced:

Why everyone knows Claro Recto’s name in the Philippines but almost nobody has ever read his works? Following Pascale Casanova’s work The World Republic of Letters and some of Pierre Bourdieu postulates, the article draws the complex linguistic reality in the Philippines at the beginning of 20th century and traces back the origins of the current literary canon of Philippine literature and its contemporary position both nationally and internationally. It also discusses how markers of literary prestige were swapped by markers of political and patriotic prestige to determine a canon in terms of the author’s contribution to the creation of a suitable “Philippine national identity”.

Brief summary and critique of a selection of Philippine literature: the two novels of Jose Rizal, Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, two short stories, one in Tagalog and the other in Hiligaynon, and selected poems including Balagtas' Florante at Laura. (I delivered this paper to the West London Gastronomico and Philosophical Society, UK on 10 November 2020.)
The word literature is derived from the Latin term litera which means letter. Some loosely interpret literature as any printed matter written within a book, a magazine or a pamphlet. Others define literature as a faithful reproduction of man's manifold experiences blended into one harmonious expression. Because literature deals with ideas, thoughts and emotions of man, literature can be said to be the story of man. Man's loves, grief's, thoughts, dreams and aspirations coached in beautiful language is literature. In order to know the history of a nation's spirit, one must read its literature. MAPPING THE FEATURES OF PHILIPPINE LITERATURE PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD ✓ Our ancient literature shows our customs and traditions in everyday life as traced in our folk stories, old plays and short stories. ✓ Our ancestors also had their alphabet-similar of the Malayo-Polynesian. ✓ Whatever records our ancestors were either burned by Spanish friars or written on materials that easily perished ✓ It is oral in nature and is full of lessons and ideas about life, its blessings, and its consequences. ✓ The verses were addressed to the ears rather than the eyes ✓ Verse composed and sung were regarded as group property
Necessary Fictions examines the intimate but fraught connection between Philippine literature and nationalist discourse during the post-war period. Through close readings of the fiction of Jose Rizal, Amado Hernandez, Nick Joaquin, Edgardo Reyes, Ricardo Lee, Kerima Polotan, Carlos Bulosan, and Mano de Verdades Posadas, this book argues that the long-standing affinity between Philippine literature and nationalism is rooted in part on the power of literature to formulate, and work through, a set of questions that are central to nationalist debates on the possibility and necessity of social change: What is the relationship between knowledge and action? between the personal and the political? between the foreign and the Filipino? between culture and history, culture and politics, culture and economics? Moreover, Philippine literature does not merely illuminate and deepen our understanding of the fundamental assumptions which inform nationalist discourse and practice. It also registers the contradictions which exceed nationalist attempts to intervene, intellectually and politically, in the complex realities at work in Philippine society. These “excesses”, which bear the ineradicable signatures of the oppressed and the marginalized, expose the anxieties—and the liberatory potential—underpinning the difficult creation of Philippine modernity in the twentieth century and beyond. Literature in its broadest sense is life for it has in its scope man's expression and reaction to the events of his time. The diversity and richness of Philippine literature evolved side by side with the country's history. A great deal of historical writing ranks as literature, particularly the genre known as creative non-fiction. It records data or convey information because it is an allegiance to history and as an adequate response to human difficultiesindividual memory, freedom and universal aesthetic ideals. Poetry with its aesthetics embroiders the feelings and emotions of the people thus; man reacts to the significant events around him. It is true that Philippine history and government would cover the important events of the past but they don't describe nor picture in details the feelings, thought, dreams and actual life of the Filipinos. Literature is the inexhaustible riches of the past from which ideas are handed down through the centuries, influencing the way Philippines develops its society and civilization. The study of Philippine poetry offers a glimpse of the sacrifices that people have endured for the sake of the nation. This study analyzed selected Philippine poems which reflect the significant events in the Philippines during its colonial years. It offers an alternative approach in studying an important stage of Philippine history. The deepest truths of history are found in literatures which are inscribed in language making the reading of the work an intelligent operation of expressions.

Why does everyone know Claro M. Recto’s name in the Philippines but almost nobody has ever read his works? Following Pascale Casanova as well as some postulates by Pierre Bourdieu and Itamar Even-Zohar, the article outlines the complex linguistic reality in the Philippines at the beginning of the 20th century and traces the origins of the current literary canon of Philippine literature, as well as its contemporary position both nationally and internationally. It also discusses how markers of literary prestige were supplanted by markers of political and patriotic prestige, thereby creating a literary canon based on an author’s contribution to the creation of a suitable ‘Philippine national identity’.

Focus of Experience in 21st Century Philippine Literature: A Content Analysis
- PAULINE GRACE CASIL-BATANG [email protected] CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY-ANDREWS
This study generally aimed to examine representations of males and females in the 21 st century Philippine literature found in narratives specifically in the short stories taken from each of the timeframes of 21 st century, 2001-2006; 2007-2012; and 2013-present. Specifically, it looked into how females and males are represented in terms of focus of experience. The study made use of mixed-method, qualitative and quantitative research design, and used narratives in the form of short stories taken from 21 st Century Philippine literature to be the corpus of analysis. The narratives are all winners of first (1 st ) prize Palanca award and represent the three timeframes of the 21 st century, 2001-2006; 2007-2012; and 2013 to present. The data from the three narratives were content analyzed with the use of quantification and qualification of statements. Based on the results of the study, women across all timeframes still struggle for their position in the society. Their battle against gender inequality continues even until this time. The three narratives reflect these findings.
