Thrill-seeking journalist Murugan heads to Malaysia to look for ordinary folks with odd stories, to be used as part of the true paranormal story collection he writes for a magazine. Everything goes well at first for him upon his arrival in Malaysia, that is until he encounters a supernatural experience that changes his life.

Went in with low expectations (despite the many positive reviews) but the film threw me off-guard. I was expecting the usual horror tropes, but it just dived deeper and deeper into richer territory of folklore and cultural history.
Beautiful narrative with excellent, layered characters/ performances and sound design. There were a couple of scenes in the film that were so well-executed, that I actually started looking away from the screen. Enjoyed it thoroughly and cheers to more Malaysian films like this 🖤
P. S: Wished the cinematography was a little more sleek in some of the scenes, but that's just me nitpicking.

Shanjhey Kumar Perumal 's Jagat was the first film that made me treasure the Malaysian Tamil Film Industry. Then Metro Maalai arrived, surprising everyone.
Poochandi has now become the benchmark for not only Malaysian Tamil films, but also Tamil diaspora films, due to its widespread appeal. The storyline was solid, though a few elements in the early second half of the film didn't work for me. However, once the first plot twist was revealed, everything appeared to fall into place, and the third act was truly gold. For real,I got goosebumbs during the climax. The performances and technical elements contributed to the overall appeal of the picture. Director JK Wicky 's script plays a crucial role in the entire picture,…

Finally, a Tamil horror film that understands the genre better than 99% of our locally produced garbage. A few cliched genre tropes aside there’s plenty to appreciate here, from the core cast’s performances to the twists and turns backed by a historical backbone that Malaysians rarely portray in our films. I see myself and my people in this tired genre & it’s wholly refreshing. Not quite Hollywood but Kollywood enough to warrant further examination & discussion. Beyond it’s horror trappings though there’s so many side themes for a Malaysian Indian to reflect upon, from the greed that comes from the poverty grid we’re stuck in to the erasure of our cultural past in this country. It’s a loaded gun of a topic…

I went to watch the movie with zero expectations. I only went for it after seeing good reviews and also to support our Malaysian movie. Little did I know that I was in for a ride of thrill! As a fan of horror and thriller flicks, I must say Poochandi was a solid, perfectly made film! First of all, I would like to congratulate the entire cast and crew of this film. From story, screenplay, cinematography, lighting and BGMs everything was top notch! I’m not even kidding right now.
Unlike other ghost or paranormal films, POOCHANDI manages to keep viewers glued to the screen. A fascinating story, given by both new and veteran performers, is best portrayed throughout the film.…

one of the best malaysian tamil films out there. had a solid and unique plot, backed up by a crispy runtime and an engaging screenplay. minimal characters and decent characterisation did make the film more interesting but wished it had a little more scenes that got me at the edge of my seat. climax was actually a shocker tho, not just the twist but the way it ended it…
my ratings: 3.5⭐️

Doesn’t have great scenes or characters, but ‘Poochandi’ was engaging (the final 30 minutes in particular was well done). Wish the cinematography was better.

I kept my expectations extremely low, even though Yashwiin Anne urged me to see this. Initially, it began like a standard clichéd narrative, but it truly took a turn after a few minutes. truly engaged me during the film. I can appreciate that they had a very restricted budget to make the film. The cinematography could have been improved, but the sound effects and music were terrific.
The two specific instances at the hostel made me gasp. The editing and the costume were decent enough to feed me a little apprehension. Logan Nathan , as a handicap, gave an excellent performance. That mythical element seemed a little implausible, but they created it in such a neat manner. It was more than a horror thriller, it was a mystery thriller for me. I observed the ' Aayirathil Oruvan ' poster on the wall, and to be honest, this film may be regarded a fantasy mystery thriller also.
Review by Devendran ★★★★
Surprised me very hard. Loved this film, filled with history, folklores, hostel ghost stories (comes in a a package). My favourite part is Vel scene and obviously the climax......looking forward how the revenge saga would take place. I felt Tinesh have outshined all other actors in this film. The sound enhanced the fear of the entity. I would place this film with Tumbad and the Wailing due to the ability to pull off such a film with limited budget.

A Malaysian tamil thriller. I loved the way the movie started and with the proceedings it went through. The game they played and post things were good too. The director kept us engaged till the preclimax portion. But I didnt like the way it was ended. It didnt work for me basically. It was informative in the end, but I didnt like it. Kudos to the director for pulling up the rest. Performance wise the cast looks new. Here and there is some issues. But the screenplay kept us engaging. A DECENT thriller movie for sure. Streaming in netflix. Give it a try you may like it.

Great Movie and thoroughly enjoyed reference to Lord Shiva throughout. Its more mythological - super natural thriller genre rather than horror ; Looking forward to sequel which might be based in Madurai , The Revenge Of Poochandi on Non-Believers.

New story with new concept. Very attached to Msians with some Malay words. Something different and after so long and so many tamil horror@comedy movies, one really creates some goosebumps and a real horror with logical scenes. Bravo to the team. Proud of Malaysian Tamil Movie Association. Hope to see more...

Poochandi; Brilliant Screenplay With Stellar Performance Depicting Hindu Ancient History
It wasn't over. it still isn't over. benchmark this.
Worth the wait!
After all, if the past year-and-a-half cooped up in our homes has taught us anything, it’s that there’s nothing better than a mind-brewing Malaysian Tamil movie to take us to a place that’s far, far away from our current one.
Pain is temporary, but a well-written screenplay is forever!
To begin with, it’s time for us to say that Poochandi is an absolute delight of a masterpiece to watch in 2022. Yes, you’ve heard all the buzz about this movie. But if you haven’t watched it yet, make room in your schedule.
Wickneswaren Kaliaperumal or JK Wicky is a director full of fascinating stories, and this is what I felt when I watched his film. He falls among that rare breed of directors, whose films are trend-setters, and in fact, a genre, in itself. What makes his films extra special are the real, genuine, relatable and, above all, flawed characters.
Touted to be a horror thriller genre, t he story follows an Indian national and horror story magazine journalist Murugan (RJ Ramana) who travels to Malaysia to collect unique and paranormal stories. What started as an ordinary story search turns into a horrific life changing mystery when Murugan meets Shankar, who shares a spine-chilling paranormal experience that happened to him and his friends.
Heard of the ‘spirit of the coin’ game session?
A game which is similar to Ouija Board. Yes, but what makes this film different?
Poochandi is something powerful and tantalising about the fear of the unknown and the rich history of Hinduism. Supernatural stories and myths of other fascinating entities which have been around since ancient times. It can be anywhere, it can look like anyone, and it won’t stop following its victims until they’re dead, or they choose to extend the curse to somebody else.
As an audience, I felt that Wicky’s Poochandi was a brave effort and his hard work is bound to result in the success of this mind-blowing flick. Right from the start of the movie, I noticed that the director has put in his time for the research, which translated into delivering facts to the audience.
The Coin, Kannukku Theriyathe Nathi, Thoppan, Chokan and Suppan are among the important elements that all I can say is the amount of research that has come out of each and every aspect of our ancient Hindu history, really wowed me!
Be it visuals, action sequences, VFX and make-up, all these factors in the movie has surely taken our Malaysian Tamil Film Industry to the next level, thanks to outstanding visualisation by Wicky and his technicians to bring the director’s dream alive on-screen.
Having said that, with a nerve-wrecking plot, the movie is technically brilliant. Be it the scenes in the UUM hostels or in paddy fields, where even the driest field looked stunning, these scenes never failed to dazzle us!
The movie is worth another watch because of the cast!
Why do we say so?
Featuring Mirchi Ramana, Dinesh Sarathi Krishnan, Logan Nathan, Ganesan Manoharan , and Hamsini Perumal , they have delivered a masterful performance on point. In addition to being eye-catching, t he casts for the movie were handpicked meticulously by the team to give the best performance and give justice to the characters.
Apart from the stellar cast, the Founder of Astana Art’s – the late Ravi Shankar’s meticulous performance of the title character Poochandi , was simply fabulous. His every step during the night rain scene in the middle of the paddy field, really was goosebump worthy.
Definitely a scene to look out for!
Sound design is an important element for this movie and it has been expertly done by the sound team!
Meticulously created, this flick has its sound design as one of its strong backbone having witnessed the sound team give and impactful sound design that would resonate an amplify the suspense that the movie is about. Jeson & Dustin Atty the main duo of Sound Design from Sound Universe has given a truly original score, which adds layers to the setting, context, and suspense of the film, is the first aspect of the sound design that stands out.
Poochandi reminds audiences that some success comes from talent and hard work, and some of it just comes from being in the right place at the right time.
“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Poochandi offers a chance for anyone who has questions about the Hindu ancient story. What difference is a miracle from a supernatural event, anyway?
