Experiment 375: Phantasmo

*snickers* Now, we come to one of my most invincible of creations; Experiment 375!

Stats/Strengths [ ]

Pod Color: Yellow

Experiment 375 Phantasmo

'Fret not, buoys and gulls! Mackie Macaw and the Hammerheads are BACK!'

Gender: Male

Special Abilities:

He was designed to cause chaos by possessing inanimate objects similarly to a ghost or specter, and he was very good at this! ... Too good ! He quickly got out of control, so I was forced to deactivate him to avoid him blowing up my old laboratory! Which wasn't easy, since very few things can actually harm him. The only way I was able to imprison him in a pod at all was thanks to some well-timed traps made of a special type of magnetic rock that tampers with 375's molecular structure: polaris rocks. But since they're only on the planet Polaris, and no polaris rocks were on Earth, this proved problematic when he was unintentionally activated not long after the rehabilitation of 513.

Heck, we did not even be knowing he was there until a day or two after activation! 375 has an advanced program compared to others; once discovered he would try to off those who had found him out. Hence why deactivating him proved...a big problem. I still haven't gotten the ectoplasm off the wall...

Going to 375's structure, he was constructed from the basis of an old horror film Jumba and ex-wife saw when we were in college. *chuckles* Tacky special effects, but Guro Nivonska was brilliant! 375 has the form of a hologram, but can manipulate objects through a specially formed prism found only in the crystal mines of Detrota 9.

One True Place: Regardless, it was a big hassle trying to capture him, and it was only after going to strange kiddie restaurant did 375 reform. Now, he sings for those who enjoy oddball tropical birds singing out-of-tune Elvis Presley hits. He has been rather tied with work, so he hasn't been seen much since, but he does drop by as Little Girl's pet doll on occasion for play dates.

Lilo , Stitch , and their family enjoy dinner and games at Macki Macaw's  until the animatronic bird falls off its perch and burns up. Jumba and Pleakley are oddly impressed by the lackluster performance. Despite the technical failure, Lilo enjoys the restaurant and wishes she could come more often. Lilo and Stitch play the claw game with Stitch's only quarter and are able to pull in an oyster. The machine holds onto the prize and Stitch shakes it until the trinket is released. Nani scolds the alien, but the employee allows them to keep it and leave.

Back at her house , Lilo must give Stitch a bath, but when Nani says the "b-word", Stitch flees from the tub. Stitch attempts to take refuge in Jumba's room, but Lilo easily discovers his hiding spot. She drags him to the bathroom and splashes him into the water. As she does so, the oyster shell, which contains a yellow experiment pod, is washed away into the hallway. Experiment 375 is washed into a corner and activated. Resembling a ghost, 375 begins causing trouble by entering objects, creating a mess in the kitchen.

Stitch rushes to the sounds in the kitchen, but after he catches Pleakley's dishes, the experiment causes him to fall, shattering them. Nani angrily sends Stitch to his room, but Lilo believes Stitch is telling the truth in his innocence. Nani says it's bedtime and they will discuss it the next day.

During the night, the ghost experiment sneaks into Lilo's room and enters her doll Scrump . Stitch follows Scrump out of the room into the living the room, but after finding nothing, he attempts to return to the room, only to be hit by the elevator platform.

A loud scream sets the morning into motion. Nani's face has been painted green, Jumba's experiment analyzer has been tampered with, and Pleakley's plant has gone missing. Lilo comes downstairs wondering where Stitch is. He is found in the living room holding a paintbrush in one hand and Pleakey's begonia in the other hand. Lilo believes her pet is innocent until she sees her broken record player nearby. A picture on the ground also displays Stitch scratching his foot with Nani's purple toothbrush, infuriating Nani more. She angrily tosses him outside, and orders that he cannot come inside until she returns home. As Lilo closes the door, Scrump laughs at Stitch's misfortune.

Lilo creates a cardboard doghouse for Stitch before she has to chain him to a tree. She warns him that he must be on his best behavior.

Inside, Lilo begins an Elvis movie marathon with Scrump. Through the window, Stitch notices Scrump messing with Lilo's movies. He detaches his chain and charges in to attack the doll. Lilo believes Stitch is trying to tear apart her movies, and, as he attacks Scrump once more, Jumba nets 626. Lilo still holds out hope that her alien is innocent and deserves a fair trial.

Jumba begins acting as judge and Pleakley attempts to prosecute Stitch. He gives the evidence for Stitch's guilt, but Lilo still claims 626 is not guilty. She questions Stitch whether he did any of the "crimes", but he replies he can only remember sleeping the whole time. Pleakley uses Stitch's violence towards Lilo's stuffed animals as incriminating evidence, and Scrump gives a sly look towards Stitch. He attacks the doll, just as Nani returns home. Jumba believes perhaps Stitch is reverting to his evil ways.

Jumba puts Stitch in a machine to scan him for evil qualities. He is left alone there, but as he examines the photograph, he sees Scrump in a mirror reflection, taking the picture.

Jumba and Pleakley watch an Elvis movie, but Lilo notices that her rag doll has gone missing. She finds it in Jumba's room, destroying Pleakley's plant. Experiment 375 exits Scrump and enters into a length of rope. He uses it to tie up Lilo, Jumba, and Pleakley, leaving them trapped. Jumba recognizes him, but the experiment soon reenters Scrump and holds a gun towards them. Soon, however, Stitch climbs through the window to free his family and find 375.

As they search downstairs, Pleakley attempts to hide upstairs, but his way is cut off by a vacuum cleaner controlled by Phantasmo. Stitch is unable to net 375 and Lilo is not able to trap him in a capsule , because Phantasmo can phase through objects. They pursue him through town , but are still unable to catch him. He soon begins chasing them in the buggy , but Nani picks Lilo and Stitch up in her jeep. The experiment chases them, but Lilo finally discovers that Phantasmo craves attention. Lilo begs Nani to lead him to the pizza restaurant, Macki Macaw's.

They lead him inside and he traps Stitch in the claw machine. Lilo is chased backstage by him, and he enters the broken animatronic. Lilo opens the curtains and when Phantasmo realizes he has an audience, he begins putting on a show. Nani apologizes to Stitch for counting him guilty. They promise to forgive her as long as she buys games and pizza. 375 happily rocks out and is pleased that he has all eyes on him.

  • When the blue parrot (Macki Macaw and the Hammerheads) playing the squeezebox was first seen, the creators, for some reason, accidentally got the color of his talons wrong; blue instead of orange. This is fixed the next time he was seen.
  • Moral: Innocent until proven guilty.
  • The opening sequence showing the Macki Macaw animatronic catching fire from a malfunction would later prove prophetic within Disney as a whole; The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management) would close for a similar reason when one of the two animatronic figures of Iago caught fire.
  • This is one of the rare times Pleakley is seen wearing his military uniform from the original movie , the other times being in " Fibber " and " Sample ".
  • Pleakley mistakenly claims Stitch's toes to be purple, when they are actually black (at least in the show).
  • This is one of three episodes where Stitch is treated like an actual dog, the other two being " Yapper " and " Bad Stitch ".
  • It is unknown how Stitch got out of Jumba's machine, though it is possible that either the machine released him after it did not detect any evil in him at all, or he was able to somehow free himself.
  • Near the end of the episode, when Stitch looks excitedly at the money Nani gives him for games and pizza, the light reflections in Stitch's eyes temporarily become pupils.

Lilo & Stitch: The Series S1 E2 "Phantasmo" Recap

A green ghostly experiment causes destruction at the Pelekai residence, framing Stitch for it all, and Lilo must prove Stitch's innocence to Nani as a result. The Pelekai ʻohana are spending dinner time at Macki Macaw's enjoying pizza, games, and "primitive Earth entertainment technology" when Lilo decides to play a claw game for a "genuine" pearl oyster. Stitch offers the only quarter that he brought and manages to grab the shell, although the machine breaks before it awards the prize. He shakes the machine to release the prize and Nani scolds him, but the Macki Macaw's employee working there allows Lilo and Stitch to keep the prize, provided that they leave.

Back at home, Lilo tries to give Stitch a bath, but he runs off when Nani says the "B-word". After Lilo grabs him again and puts him in the tub, the splash of water from him going in washes away the oyster shell, which opens to reveal to the audience the pod of Experiment 375. The experiment activates away from everyone's sight and causes a huge mess in the kitchen. Stitch, who just came out of the tub, notices the mess and tries to save Pleakley's dishes from breaking, but the rug he was standing on was literally pulled from underneath him by 375, causing Stitch to drop them. Nani gets angered at the sight of the mess and sends Stitch to his room, even though he tries to proclaim his innocence. Lilo tries to defend him, but Nani says that it's bedtime, so they'll talk about it tomorrow.

Overnight, 375 sneaks into Lilo and Stitch's bedroom and takes control of her doll Scrump. Stitch notices and follows the doll into the living room, but aside from Lilo's record player going off, he does not find anything. However, as he tries to return to his bedroom, he gets knocked out by the elevator platform going down on him.

The next morning, Nani screams as she notices her face painted green, while Jumba and Pleakley run out of their room after a small explosion. Jumba says that his experiment analyzer is sabotaged and Pleakley shows that his begonia's gone missing. After Lilo comes down wondering where Stitch is, everyone find him waking up in the living room with a paintbrush and Pleakley's plant in his hands, with Lilo's record player and "Hound Dog" single broken. They also find a photograph of Stitch supposedly scrubbing his foot with Nani's purple toothbrush, which causes her to kick him out of the house in disgust and anger, ordering him to stay outside until she returns home. Lilo then has Stitch chained to a tree, telling him not to break free from it so they can prove to Nani that he can behave.

Lilo decides to have an Elvis movie marathon (consisting of Blue Hawaii three times in a row) with Scrump while she and Stitch wait for Nani to come home. As Lilo gets popcorn from the kitchen, Stitch look in from the windows to see Scrump ruining Lilo's videotapes. He comes in and attacks the doll, and Lilo sees him in the process. He tries to tell her that the "scary dolly" was the one ruining the tapes, but Lilo doubts that. After Stitch attacks Scrump again, Jumba nets him. Lilo still believes Stitch is innocent though and demands a fair trial.

With Jumba acting as judge, Pleakley acting as prosecutor, and Lilo's toys as the "jury", Lilo claims that Stitch is not guilty of the "crimes" that happened earlier, with him saying (in Tantalog ) that he was asleep the whole time. When Pleakley uses Stitch's past violence towards Lilo's toys as incriminating evidence, Scrump gives a sly look towards Stitch, prompting him to attack the doll again just as Nani returns home. Jumba believes that Stitch could be reverting to his original destructive programming, so he places him in a machine outside to scan him for evil qualities. Once Stitch is left alone, he looks at the photograph of the toothbrush scrubbing his foot, and notices Scrump taking the picture in a mirror reflection.

While Jumba and Pleakley watch an Elvis film, Lilo seems to have suddenly lost Scrump. She finds the rag doll ruining Pleakley's plant in his and Jumba's room. Experiment 375 leaves Scrump, revealing himself to her, and takes possession of a long length of rope, restraining her and then Jumba and Pleakley. 375 then reveals himself to Jumba and Pleakley, causing Jumba to recognize him, and takes control of Scrump again to fire a gun at the three. Before 375 could do so however, Stitch enters through the window and pins Scrump down, forcing 375 to escape. Stitch frees his family, with Lilo relieved that he's now proven innocent.

As Lilo, Stitch and Jumba look for 375, Pleakley tries to hide back in his room, but "Phantasmo" (as Lilo called 375 earlier) cuts him off by possessing a vacuum cleaner and sucks his head into it. Stitch and Lilo find that they cannot trap Phantasmo in a net or a containment capsule, since he is intangible . They try to chase down the experiment, but they still cannot catch him, especially when he takes control of the X-Buggy. Nani picks up Lilo and Stitch in her jeep, having been told by Jumba and Pleakley about the experiment. Lilo realizes that Phantasmo desires attention, so she has Nani stop at Macki Macaw's.

The experiment of the episode :

  • Phantasmo (X-375) : A green ghost-like experiment who has the ability to possess inanimate objects.

Tropes featured in this episode include:

  • A Day in the Limelight : A very rare case of an inanimate object (Scrump) getting this trope, being involved in the main plot.
  • Attention Whore : Phantasmo, apparently. Lilo actually uses his desire for attention to get him to turn good, by having him take control of the Macki Macaw animatronic to entertain the restaurant's guests.
  • Bookends : The episode begins at Macki Macaw's with the titular animatronic breaking down, and ends back at the restaurant with Phantasmo now possessing the animatronic and making the animatronic show a lot better.
  • Chekhov's Gun : The Macki Macaw animatronic that breaks down at the beginning of the episode. It becomes Phantasmo's one true place at the end, using the animatronic to entertain children.
  • Dish Dash : At one point, Phantasmo tries to knock over all of Pleakley's stacked dishes by the kitchen sink, but Stitch manages to catch all of them without breaking any. What happens next is detailed below under Pulling the Rug Out .
  • Easily Condemned : The instant Stitch is caught in the mess that Phantasmo made, he is quickly blamed for causing it, including many others.
  • Frame-Up : Phantasmo frames Stitch for causing trouble in the house, causing him to get punished.
  • Hates Baths : Stitch believes that he'll drown in the tub. Lilo almost tricks him into bathing, but then Nani asks her if she gave him a bath yet.
  • He Knows Too Much : When Phantasmo is caught by Lilo, Jumba, and Pleakley, he tries to, as Jumba puts it, " eliminate " the three of them with a laser gun so they won't blow his cover.
  • Intentional Mess Making : The episode's titular experiment breaks dishes, Jumba's experiment analyzer device, Lilo's record player, tapes, and Hound Dog single, which Stitch gets blamed for .
  • Jerkass Ball : Nani, of all people, is nastier to Stitch in this episode, such as refusing to hear his side of the story, putting him outside and even threatening to get rid of him. She also threatens to force Lilo to stay outside with Stitch as well should she continue to protest his punishment.
  • Living Toys : Scrump becomes one thanks to Phantasmo.
  • Mundane Utility : Stitch shows that he can use his retractable lower pair of arms as pockets, pulling his lower right arm out to bring out a quarter for the claw machine.
  • Must Have Caffeine : At the beginning of the episode, Stitch is excitedly waiting for some soda, but Lilo tells the impatient experiment to wait his turn. After Stitch reluctantly complies, Pleakley pours Lilo some soda, but he doesn't pour Stitch a drop after the experiment tries to hand over his cup when it becomes his turn. Naturally, Stitch gets angry at the denial, jumps on the pizza, and chugs down what's left in the pitcher. Nice one, Pleakley!
  • Never Say "Die" : When Phantasmo ties up Lilo, Pleakley, and Jumba, the latter says the experiment is going to "eliminate" them now that they know he's the culprit behind the messes in the Pelekai household.
  • Noodle Incident : Stitch has a history of biting Lilo's toys according to Pleakley. Pleakley : Wasn't it defendant 626 who chewed off the arm of Mr. Fluffy Bear, here? Lilo : Objection! I... sewed it back on. Pleakley : And how about little Suzy Teaparty? Anybody seen her head? I haven't. Because it's gone! Lilo : Objection! (slams hand on the coffee table) Stitch didn't mean to eat it. It was a freak accident! He was... accidentally hungry .
  • Pulling the Rug Out : After Stitch successfully catches all the falling dishes in the kitchen, Phantasmo actually possesses the rug Stitch is standing on to pull it from underneath him, causing him to fall over and drop them all.
  • Pun : The very first line in the episode. Macki Macaw : Aloha, buoys and gulls! note  "Boys and girls". Also, to non-American readers, buoy is pronounced "boo-ee" in American English, not identically to "boy". This being an American-produced show, Macki said it as "boo-ee", which makes the pun even lamer.
  • Recycled Animation : The clip of the Phantasmo-possessed X-Buggy firing goop at Nani's jeep is used at least three times during the car chase near the end.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness : Jumba describes his and Pleakley's laundry hamper as a "soiled laundry receptacle".
  • Spot the Thread : The photo that has Stitch scrubbing his toes with Nani's toothbrush has the part with the mirror showing Scrump (possessed by Phantasmo) taking the shot was conveniently covered up by Pleakley's finger until Stitch looked at it while confined. That being said, it ultimately becomes irrelevant when shortly afterwards, Lilo finds Scrump knocking over Pleakley's plant.
  • Suck E. Cheese's : Macki Macaw's, where the restaurant's titular animatronic suddenly bursts into flames in the first minute of the episode and has a cheap claw machine that doesn't let go of its prizes. The place gets better by the end though thanks to Phantasmo.
  • Troll : Nani causes much frustration for Lilo when she says the "B-word". (Stitch, wearing an inner tube, gets stuck in the dog door.) Lilo : You know how he is about water. I almost had him lulled into a false sense of security. And then you said the B-word! Never say the B-word ! (She tries to pull him out.) Nani : You mean... (slyly smiles) bath?! (Stitch freaks out upon hearing the word and breaks free from the door and inner tube, with Lilo ending up in the tube.) Lilo (defeated and aggravated) : Why do you torment me?
  • Would Hurt a Child : When Phantasmo is caught in the act by 6-year-old Lilo, he ties her up and tries to, in Jumba's words, " eliminate " her, him and Pleakley to keep them from exposing him. Later, when Phantasmo possesses the X-Buggy, he tries to run Lilo over with it.

Video Example(s):

Macki Macaw's

The tropical Kokaua Town, Hawaii has a tropical-themed Chuck E. Cheese-styled restaurant called Macki Macaw's, where "primitive Earth entertainment technology" randomly breaks down and catches fire, claw machines cheat by refusing to let go of their prizes, and aliens make a mess after being denied soda despite having waited for their turn. (OK, that last one's Pleakley's fault that he didn't pour Stitch soda after Lilo told her best friend to wait to be poured some.)
